The Friedensengel, or Angel of Peace, hanging out way down over the trees, beyond the barrages along the Isar near Maximiliansbrücke. The barrages made for an incredibly fierce waterflow; even standing upstream you would get sprayed, and you'd have to yell to be heard over the noise. Doesn't look like much in this photo, I guess, and I've seen others' photos of the water at a distinctly lower level. But when we were there---put it this way, there was the remains of a small tree rolling around right below one of the step-downs. The force of the barrelling water meant that even though we watched for ten or fifteen minutes, the tree never made it down even one single step, much less away down the river. The water just trapped the tree where it was, pummelling it. There were life preservers on ropes mounted along the piers of the bridge, and metal ladders bolted to the tall concrete embankments of the river. That's a nice gesture, but I think if you fell in here, you would be toast.
