Orloj
Made by George*50
Astronomical Clock, Prague ....................... The Orloj is a marvel of mechanical engineering, showing the current state of the universe at any point in time for six hundred years. The complexity of this clock can best be seen in this computer simulation program: www.praguealacarte.com/orloj/orlojLoader.html The tower housing the clock was built in 1381. There are three main parts of the Orloj. The clock itself was built in 1410 by Mikulas of Kadan. Although two similar clocks had already existed (one in Padua, and one in Strassbourg), Orloj is the oldest astronomical clock still using the original clockworks. The second part is the calendar dial below the clock, added in around 1490. The third part of Orloj are the two windows above the clock, where the twelve apostles come out in procession every hour. The clock face shows the earth in the center, with blue the sky above the horizon, and black sky below. The red/blue boundary represents the horizon (AVRORA being dawn, and CREPVSCVLVM being dusk). The sun pointer shows where the sun is relative to the horizon. In the daytime, it is in the blue portion, and at dusk it moves to the red, then to the black. In addition to the sun going around the dial, it also moves up and down the arm (closer or farther from the clock center), depending on the time of year. Yes, the clock also tells time. The golden hand shows the ancient Czech time (24 hour clock where 1 corresponds to sunset) on the outer ring, and the normal (Prague) time on the golden roman numerals (just inside the outer ring). The outer ring moves back and forth, so that 1 always corresponds to sunset. The Star shows the sidereal time, also on the roman numerals. (A sidereal day is the time it takes the earth to rotate once around its axis, ie 360 degrees. In comparison, a real day is the time for the earth to rotate once around and face the same direction with respect to the sun. This is around 361 degrees, since the earth has moved about 1 degree around the sun in that one day). Thus, the sidereal day is about 4 minutes shorter than the normal 24 hour day. The sun pointer also shows the time in unequal hours (the curved lines in the main circle). Unequal hours are 12 equal divisions between sunrise and sunset. The small inner ring on the clock shows the signs of the zodiac, indicating the location of the sun on the ecliptic (ie, it shows the constellation which is currently located behind the sun when looking from the earth). In this picture, the sun was in cancer (picture taken on July 10th). The moon pointer shows the rotation of the moon. The ball is half silver, half black, and it spins around its arm showing the current lunar phase. In this picture, the ball is black, indicating a new moon.

Eighteen spires

Church of Our Lady before Týn with the flanking House at the Stony Bell (on the left with the grey roof) at the Old Town Square seen from top of the Clock Tower, Prague, Czech Republic Some background information: The Gothic Church of Our Lady before Týn was built in 1365 on the site of an earlier Romanesque church. Its magnificent multiple steeples are 80m high and dominate the square. Between the early 15th century and the year of 1620 it was the main Hussite church in Prague. The construction of the early Gothic “House at the Stone Bell” started in the second half of the 13th century. With most probability it was built for Queen Elisabeth I of Bohemia, mother of Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV. Although there are no written documents about it, some pieces of medieval decoration found in the house suggest this assumption as they probably represent the royal family. Prague itself is the capital and largest city of the Czech Republic. It’s also known as the City of a Hundred Spires as well as the Golden City. It’s home to about 1.3 million people, while its metropolitan area is estimated to have a population of over 1.9 million. Situated on the Vltava River in central Bohemia, Prague has been the political, cultural and economic centre of the Czech state for more than 1.100 years. For many decades during the Gothic and Renaissance eras Prague was the permanent seat of two Holy Roman Emperors and thus was also the capital of the Holy Roman Empire. Since 1992 the extensive historic centre of Prague has been included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites, making the city one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe, which receives more than 4.1 million international visitors annually, as of 2009.

Praha hlavní nádraží
Made by filip.farag
Praha hlavní nádraží (English: Prague main railway station, abbreviated Praha hl.n) is the largest and most important railway station in Prague in the Czech Republic. It was originally opened in 1871 and named Franz Joseph I after Franz Joseph I of Austria. During the First Republic and from 1945 to 1953 the station was called Wilson station (Czech: Wilsonovo nádraží) after former President of the United States Woodrow Wilson. His statue was placed in the park in front of the station before later being destroyed by German occupiers after the U.S. entered the war. The monument was destroyed by night on 11 December 1941 and the statue melted. Hradčany Sunset
Made by Philipp Klinger Photography
Sunset over the Hradčany in Prague. Info Prague Castle (Czech: Pražský hrad) is a castle in Prague where the Kings of Bohemia, Holy Roman Emperors and presidents of Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic have had their offices. The Bohemian Crown Jewels are kept here. Prague Castle is one of the biggest castles in the world (according to Guinness Book of Records the biggest ancient castle) at about 570 meters in length and an average of about 130 meters wide. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prague_Castle Technique/Processing I shot this one, using the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 lens. At first i shot a normal photo, but i realized it didn't look good, because of the troubled waters of the Vltava. But then i remembered that i miraculously did not forget to pack my B+W ND110 ND filter, so i screwed it onto the lens and by that, could use an exposure of 15 seconds, which created the silky water you can see here. Oh, and i also had to carry my tripod around the whole day, but hey, 2kgs more or less don't matter ;) Moreover, the cloud moved during those 15 seconds and thus it seems to encircle the sun. Only one shot, no HDR

Old Jewish Cemetery
Made by Philipp Klinger Photography
If you want to catch the light on the old jewisch cemetery you really need to have good timing... Too early and the sun is still blocked by the houses around it. Too late and it's already too harsh. You need to be there when the sun comes out behind the buildings. Stunning place! Info The Old Jewish Cemetery lies in the Josefov, the Jewish Quarter of Prague in the Czech Republic. It was in use from the early 15th century (the oldest preserved tombstone, the one of Avigdor Kara, dates back to 1439) until 1787. Its ancestor was a cemetery called The Jewish Garden, which was found in archaeological excavations under the Vladislavova street, New Town. The numbers of grave stones and numbers of people buried there are uncertain, because there are layers of tombs. However, it has been estimated that there are approximately 12,000 tombstones presently visible and there may be as many as 100,000 burials in all. The most important personalities buried in the Old Jewish Cemetery are Yehuda ben Bezalel known as the Maharal Rabbi Löw (d. 1609), Mordechai Maisel (d. 1601), David Gans (d. 1613) and David Oppenheim (d. 1736).

L'Orologio Astronomico - Staroměstský Orloj
Made by Fia Zappala

Publisher House
Made by Vincént
Mladá fronta is the most influential daily newspaper in the Czech Republic. Its name could be translated into English as The Youth Front Today. The paper is owned by Rheinisch-Bergische Druckerei- und Verlagsgesellschaft GmbH, the publisher of the Rheinische Post. It was set up in 1945 under name Mladá fronta as a daily newspaper for youths. During the era of socialism, Mladá fronta was a newspaper of the Socialist Union of Youth. After the Velvet Revolution, its popularity grew and nowadays it is sometimes referred to as MF Dnes. Circulation as of 2004 is around 310,000 papers per day and as such it is one of the most popular and influential newspapers. -Wikipedia This was a totally coincidental opportunity to visit the buildings which had Mladá fronta left in 1989. These buildings are just 200 meters far from the very centre of the city (), which is quite surreal. [ http://www.pavelhorak.com/ ]

The Municipal House
Made by filip.farag
About the place: The Municipal House (in Czech, Obecní dům) is a major civic landmark and concert hall in Prague, and an important building in architectural and political history in the Czech Republic. It stands on the Náměstí Republiky. Around 1900, the building was commissioned by the city on an odd-shaped lot and the subject of one architectural competition, then another, both unsatisfactory. The job was then simply given to architects Osvald Polívka and Antonín Balšánek, who served as much as artistic coordinators as designers. Construction started in 1905 and it opened in 1912. Steel Bars
Made by Souvik_Prometure
Highest position in Explore # 4 on 6th Mar'09 Saw this fountain in front of National Museum at Wenceslas Square while crossing traffic signal. Just had 2-3 seconds to compose this but deceided to opt for slow shutter for making these water look likes steel bars. It's a shame I was not having my wide angle lens with me at that moment. Got this picture from my archives and reprocessed it by tonemapping and digitally blending single RAW file using Photoshop. Trivia Wenceslas Square is one of the main city squares and the centre of the business and cultural communities in the New Town of Prague, Czech Republic. The square is named after Saint Wenceslas, the patron saint of Bohemia. Source: Wikipedia

Man At Work
Made by an untrained eye
November 9th, 2007 - Prague, Czech Republic By the time I had checked into my hotel in Prague, there remained about twenty minutes of twilight before night closed in completely. It was cold and drizzling and I barely had time to make my way to one of the city's famed historical squares, but I did pass this man, working to the warm light of a lamp inside a shop that was in the process of being renovated. As I mentioned in the desciption to the previous photograph, I only had a small point and shoot camera with me, and the image is not quite as crisp as I would have wished, but I loved the contrast with the cold blue light outside and the shape of the shadow above the man's head.

Characters in chiaroscuro and Art Nouveau
Made by jackfre2
The New Town Hall of Prague (Novomestská Radnice) already existed in the 14th century and was extended during both the 15th and 16th century, when a Gothic tower and an arcaded courtyard were added. Following the merging of the four towns of Prague in the late 18th century, the New Town hall was no longer used as a seat of administration and today functions as simply a grand Gothic hall, being used for many social events.
