Prague Castle or Pražský hrad Taken during my recent holiday to Prague. Had a visit to Prague Castle. Although its named a castle it looks more like a church. It is a stunning castle and is a must visit for anybody going to Prague or the Czech Republic. The sun was shining through the stained glass windows as it was a nice day outside. Taken as three separate shots and combined in Photomatix. I then tweaked slightly in PSE7 and then this was the result. Information Prague Castle (Czech: Pražský hrad) is a castle in Prague where the Kings of Bohemia, Holy Roman Emperors and presidents of Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic have had their offices. The Bohemian Crown Jewels are kept here. Prague Castle is one of the biggest castles in the world (according to Guinness Book of Records the biggest ancient castle) at about 570 meters in length and an average of about 130 meters wide. The history of the castle stretches back to the 9th century (870). The first walled building was the church of Our Lady. The Basilica of Saint George and the Basilica of St. Vitus were founded in the first half of the 10th century. The first convent in Bohemia was founded in the castle, next to the church of St. George. A Romanesque palace was erected here during the 12th century. In the 14th century, under the reign of Charles IV the royal palace was rebuilt in Gothic style and the castle fortifications were strengthened. In place of rotunda and basilica of St. Vitus began building of a vast Gothic church, that have been completed almost six centuries later. During the Hussite Wars and the following decades the Castle was not inhabited. In 1485, King Ladislaus II Jagello began to rebuild the castle. The massive Vladislav Hall (built by Benedikt Rejt) was added to the Royal Palace. There were also built new defence towers on the northern side of the castle. A large fire in 1541 destroyed large parts of the castle. Under the Habsburgs some new buildings in renaissance style appeared here. Ferdinand I built Belvedere, summer palace for his wife Anne. Rudolph II used Prague Castle as his main residence. He founded the northern wing of the palace, with the Spanish Hall, where his precious artistic collections were exhibited. The Second Prague defenestration in 1618 began the Bohemian Revolt. During the subsequent wars the Castle was damaged and dilapidated. Many works from the collection of Rudolph II were looted by Swedes in 1648, in the course of the Thirty Years' War. The last major rebuilding of the castle was carried out by Queen Maria Theresa in the second half of the 18th century. Ferdinand V, after abdication in 1848, chose Prague Castle as his home. In 1918 the castle became the seat of the president of the new Czechoslovak Republic. The New Royal Palace and the gardens were renovated by Slovenian architect Jože Plečnik. Renovations continued in 1936 under Plečnik's successor Pavel Janák. During the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia during World War II, Prague Castle became the headquarters of Reinhard Heydrich, the Reich Protector of Bohemia and Moravia. It is said that he placed the Bohemian crown on his head; old legends say that a usurper who places the crown on his head is doomed to die within a year. Less than a year after assuming power, Heydrich was assassinated. After the liberation of Czechoslovakia, it housed the offices of the communist Czechoslovak government. During the Velvet Revolution, Alexander Dubček, the leader of Czechoslovakia during the Prague Spring, appeared on a balcony overlooking Wenceslas Square to hear throngs of protesters below shouting Dubček to the castle! As they pushed for him to take his seat as president of the country at Prague Castle, he embraced the crowd as a symbol of democratic freedom. After Czechoslovakia split into the Czech Republic and Slovakia, the castle became the seat of the Head of State of the new Czech Republic. Similar to what Masaryk did with Plečnik, president Václav Havel commissioned Bořek Šípek to be the architect of post-communism Prague Castle's necessary improvements in particular of the facelift of the Castle's Gallery of paintings. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prague_Castle

Tomb of King Wenceslas I in the St. Vitus Cathedral, Prague, Czech Republic
Made by The Nite Tripper
This is a photograph that I took of the tomb of King Wenceslas I, the Duke of Bohemia, inside the St. Vitus Cathedral in the city of Prague, Czech Republic. King Wenceslas is the king referred to in the Christmas carol, Good King Wenceslas. King Wenceslas was born in 907, the son of Vratislav I and Drahomíra, the daughter of a pagan tribal chief. He was raised by his father's mother after the death of his father early in his life. Under his grandmother's care, he became a Christian, much to the aggravation of his mother, who worked hard to get him to convert to her pagan religion. In 924, he took the throne and had his mother exiled. In September 935, King Wenceslas' brother, Boleslav, invited him to a feast. On his way to this feast, the king was ambushed and killed. After his death, Boleslav ascended to the throne. In the years after his death, he was canonized by the Holy Roman Catholic Church as St. Wenceslas, the patron saint of the Czech people. His feast day is September 28th, which is a national holiday in the Czech Republic known as Czech Statehood Day. King Wenceslas' crypt is to the right with the red tent-like structure on top.

Praagse Burcht - Pražský hrad

The Prague Castle, an ancient symbol of the Czech lands, is the most significant Czech monument and one of the most important cultural institutions in the Czech Republic. The Prague Castle was most likely founded in around 880 by Prince Bořivoj of the Premyslid Dynasty (Přemyslovci). According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the Prague Castle is the largest coherent castle complex in the world, with an area of almost 70,000 m². A UNESCO World Heritage site, it consists of a large-scale composition of palaces and ecclesiastical buildings of various architectural styles, from Roman-style buildings from the 10th century through Gothic modifications in the 14th century. The famous Slovenian architect Josip Plečnik was responsible for extensive renovations in the time of the First Republic (1918-1938). Since the Velvet Revolution, the Prague Castle has undergone significant and ongoing repairs and reconstructions. Source: www.hrad.cz/en/prazsky_hrad/navsteva_hradu.shtml

Façade detail of St. Vitus Cathedral at Prague Castle

Best to be viewed in large size format ® All rights are reserved. To many people, St. Vitus Cathedral is Prague Castle. While the enormous Prague Castle complex includes many fine buildings, St. Vitus is the one that dominates the city skyline and is visible from far and wide. St. Vitus is the spiritual symbol of the Czech state. A Gothic masterpiece, work on the cathedral was commissioned by Charles IV and began in 1344 upon the site of an earlier 10th century rotunda. In all, it took nearly six centuries to complete. Its first builders, Matthias of Arras and later Peter Parler, built the chancel with a ring of chapels, St. Wenceslas Chapel, the Golden Portal and the lower part of the main steeple. The final phase of construction only ended during the period 1873-1929. As well as being the largest and most important temple in Prague, St. Vitus Cathedral also oversaw the coronations of Czech kings and queens.

The cathedral's foundation stone was laid in 1344 by Emperor Charles IV. The first architect was Matthias of Arras, after his death Petr Parler took over and completed much of the structure in late-Gothic style. Over the following centuries renaissance and baroque details were added and the job was completed in 1929. The most beautiful of numerous side chapels, Parler's Chapel of St Wenceslas, houses the crown jewels and the tomb of “Good King” Wenceslas. There are many superb exaples of 20th century Czech stained glass and marvellous pieces of art, for example a wooden relief by Caspar Bechterle that shows the escape of Frederik of the Palatinate from Prague in 1621. The Royal Crypt contains the remains of Charles IV, Wenceslas IV, George of Podebrady and Rudolf II. (c)prague.cz

St. Vitus Cathedral - Prague

Click here to view larger size photo on Black This is the inside of the St Vitus Catedral, a majestic Roman Catholic church located within Prague Castle and containing the tombs of many Bohemian kings and Holy Roman Emperors. This cathedral is an excellent example of Gothic architecture and is the biggest and most important church in the country. Nikon D700 and lens Nikon AF-S 24mm f/1.4G ED. Taken hand held at ISO 2800, 1/30s at f/2.5. I could not use a tripod as I should have to eliminate blur from hand holding at that speed, so I leaned against a wall and stabilize my elbows against my body: the resulting photo is amazingly sharp!

Funny Mobile Phone Picture
Made by epSos.de
Funny picture of the best mobile phone ever. The unlocked technology behind this big telephone is so good that it can connect a call to the stars through a large satellite network. It is like the secret alien technology form the movies. This big mobile telephone is the best gift for a man who want cheap and unlocked calling services for talking with simmilar men on the new 3G network. epSos.de is not aware of any special telephony features on this handset but phoning an international phone number might be a very pleasant call, because the large battery power of this gadget is enormous so that is can autonomously reach every country on the map with it's radioactive signal.

The (Overpowering) Towering Feeling
Made by starbeard
Looking at this pic I think we have a skyscraper. But it's the camera angle giving a small obelisk a much needed ego boost; in real life the obelisk is only about 50 feet high, whereas the Cathedral is over 400 feet high. :) This is the obelisk monument at Prague castle, with St Vitus' Cathedral in the background. Both are enclosed within Prague castle's courtyard, overlooking the old town. The pic was taken in Prague last weekend. By the way, the obelisk is polished and reflecting the clouds. (I've only just worked that one out!) Makes it a little strange.

Beautiful Asian Woman Photographing

Funny picture of a beautiful Asian Woman photographing with her digital camera in the historic streets of Prague. This cute female photographer is sitting in an awkward position to take the photo of a large object in front of her. Taking pictures in this position is very common, if you do not have a swivel screen on your camera. She is dressed in a cute straw hat and an Asian designer dress. Her stylish outfit also includes an elegant bag. Her ethnicity is Asian Chinese with Korean and Japanese roots.

Beautiful Asian Woman in Dress
Made by epSos.de
Cute picture of a beautiful Asian Woman in a fashionable designer dress. This perfect example of the female beauty is posing and smiling with a traditional Chinese smile that is as humble as a single Japanese girl in a Catholic Czech Church of Prague. Her modern fashion of the dress is a clear indication that her attractive beauty comes from the oriental wisdom of the dreamy, perfect lady who has a decent taste for beautiful evening dresses for women.

Praha/Prague/Prag-Hradcany, Zlata ulicka. Zlatá Ulička (Golden Lane), a place of many legends concerning alchemists and a place famous for its exceptional charm. Also craftsmen and servants lived in the Golden Lane later. According to legends, Emperor Rudolph II. had some of his court alchemists accomodated in the Golden Lane, where they tried to turn metal into gold. That could also be the origin of the name “Golden Lane”. Date: 2008-01-06

(sic!) Hanna, Prague, setting sun and a Jupiter-9 on Fuji 160C We sneaked off from the Golden Alley of the Prague castle into a even narrower alley-way, just to end up on a practically empty square on the castle walls. It was nice to find a spot not completely busy with tourists .. though it might have been only the fact that is was close to six'o clock (closing time) and there was nothing else to see there anyway ...

Best Viewed Large! Splendid Old Royal Palace (Stary kralovsky palac) on the third courtyard used to be the seat of Bohemian princes. It was founded in the 9th century and since then has been changed significantly by great emperors Sobeslav I, Charles IV, Wenceslas IV and Vladislav Jagiello. Sobeslav I built a Romanesque palace around 1135, the remnants of which can be seen in the cellar of the present building.

St. Vitus Cathedral

I've been in Prague for a week now, and I'm leaving tomorrow. Web access has been tricky, though, but I haven't really had any time to post new images anyway... here's one of many to follow. Otherwise impossible space to photograph became easier when I took several wide angle shots of this square and combined them with Photoshop's brilliant Photomerge feature.

That is the translation of the words Nil Nisi rectum.....according to Linda!! While the interior of St. Vitus Cathedral is very beautiful, the stained glass windows are of special note. Alfons Mucha, the Czech Art Nouveau painter, was resposible for new stained glass windows for the north wall of the cathedral during the 20th century.
