This will be the front cover of the book. explore: September 14/11 Positano is a village on the Amalfi Coast, in Campania, Italy. The main part of the city sits in an enclave in the hills leading down to the coast. Positano was a port of the Amalfi Republic in medieval times, and prospered in the 16th and 17th centuries. But by the mid-19th century, the town had fallen on hard times. More than half the population emigrated, mostly to Australia. Positano was a relatively poor fishing village during the first half of the 20th century. It began to attract large numbers of tourists in the 1950s, especially after John Steinbeck published his essay about Positano in Harper's Bazaar in May, 1953: Positano bites deep, Steinbeck wrote. I love Positano !!

The Siren song / El canto de la Sirena
Made by Armando Alvarez
...To the Sirens first shalt thou come, who bewitch all men, whosoever shall come to them. Whoso draws nigh them unwittingly and hears the sound of the Sirens' voice, never doth he see wife or babes stand by him on his return, nor have they joy at his coming; but the Sirens enchant him with their clear song, sitting in the meadow, and all about is a great heap of bones of men, corrupt in death, and round the bones the skin is wasting... Circe to Odysseus in Homer's The Odyssey Rhapsody XII ...Llegarás primero a las sirenas, que encantan a cuantos hombres van a su encuentro. Dedicami i tuoi spazi e quest'immenso blu

Dedicami i tuoi spazi e quest’immenso blu. Dedicami i tuoi spazi e quest’immenso blu.

by John Steinbeck, ( from Harper's Bazaar, May 1953 Positano bites deep. It is a dream place that isn’t quite real when you are there and becomes beckoningly real after you have gone. Its houses climb a hill so steep it would be a cliff except that stairs are cut in it. I believe that whereas most house foundations are vertical, in Positano they are horizontal. The small curving bay of unbelievably blue and green water lips gently on a beach of small pebbles. There is only one narrow street and it does not come down to the water. Everything else is stairs, some of them as steep as ladders.

Phaunus, the nature-spirit faun, the followers of Dionysus (Bacchus in later Roman mythology) are more accurately satyrs; the wild and orgiastic spirits that harassed nymphs. Fauns and satyrs were originally quite different creatures: whereas fauns are half-man and half-goat, satyrs originally were depicted as stocky, hairy, ugly dwarfs or wood woses with the ears and tails of horses or asses. Ancient Roman mythological belief also included a god named Faunus and a goddess named Fauna who were goat people.

(I know that the right word is oblique, but i need to joke... :-D ) . .

Sleeping outside

But in the Positano there are lots of feral cats. Shy and curious, trusting and feeling fear when approached. We watched this one sleep on the stone bench all the day. In the night, we walked the same stairs to hostel and saw some dark lump at the base of the bench. Oh shhh, it's the cat, let's not wake him up! Next day we discovered it was an empty flower pot, forgotten there. Tight asleep, one might say.

We took the bus from Sorrento to Positano on our third day in the Amalfi coast area. We went through it previously on our way to Ravello, so we knew what to expect. A pretty amazing looking place. Took this one after we got off the bus, before we started making our way down to the City below.
