Bayonne Harbor

I got to go to Bayonne Harbor for work today, and discovered a small wooden Harbor Observation Area platform, which was fun to stand on and look at the Statue of Liberty. Plus the steady stream of Mercedes-es rolling off the container ship, and the steady stream of beat-up secondhand SUVs rolling onto another, much more nondescript ship. There were lots of guys brandishing cellphones and shouting at each other, too, as well as semi tractors going the wrong way down one-way streets. Each big depot has a rolling twelve-foot gate, and an effcient, no-nonsense guy in a uniform jacket staffing it. Inside the gates, all is calm, order, and clipboards. Outside the gates, all is beat-up secondhand cars and shouting.

There was a long line of beat-up SUVs and other cars without license plates, all rolling into a barbed-wire parking lot; I assume to get shipped off to the Middle East or Africa. Every car had a driver, but there was NOBODY on foot. Right behind me is the Waterfront Observation Area, which was an incongruous wooden structure to allow you to look at the statue of liberty, listen to the drivers' arguments, etc.

This is the actual platform. It's a relief to stand here and take pictures; pretty much everywhere else, I was afraid that someone was going to see me taking pictures and push the Big Red Terrorism Alert button or whatever UPDATE: ooh, here's a really nice panorama taken from the tower: 360vr.com/PortJersey/index2.htm

Picture taken from a New Jersey shipping terminal looking north to Manhattan. To the left is midtown and the Empire State Bldg, awash in patriotic light. At center left is the Statue of Liberty, seemingly looking at ground zero. At center right is the tribute in light. And to the far right is the Brooklyn Bridge.

the clock on the left is marked with bands of green as a reminder of the three-minute silent periods (no calls transmitted) during which the radio man is required to listen for any incoming distress calls. i think this practice dates back kinda far though, and isn't done anymore.

Taken on the pier in Jersey City where you catch the boat to the Statue of Liberty. That's Ellis Island in the background and Lower Manhattan behind that.

I think she had two speeds...slow and stop. Very friendly, as were all of the crew, but you'd best not go there parched...you'd die of thirst!
