On Monday I went to Canary Wharf to take some photos, I am sure some of you will already be aware where this is leading and that it wasn’t the best choice of locations for a days trouble free picture taking. Not that is if you don’t like the idea of enduring the wrath of a man in uniform . I went with my 12 year old son, who doesn’t have his own Flickr site because he may be too young (haven’t checked the age rules yet) but if he did have one it would probably look something like Anyway, we took about a dozen photos of the buildings and then walked around before starting to take some more. Suddenly a security guard appeared on the opposite side of the road and shouted something across over the traffic noise. ‘What did he say’ said my son. ‘I am not sure’ I said ‘I think he said ‘Nose Picker’. I’ve told you not to do that in public haven’t I?’ ‘Sorry?’ I shouted back at him ‘No pictures’ he replied. ‘Yes there are, I replied. I have checked the LCD screen and they are coming out fine’ ‘No’ he shouted ‘You are not allowed to take photos here’ ‘What?? But I am outside, I am in a public place’ ‘No, this is private property and photography is not allowed’ ‘What does he mean’ said my son. ‘Haven’t a clue, he’s probably drunk. Just point the camera at the floor and wait for him to go away’ At which point the security guard turned around and went back to sit in his cabin on his oversized rear, probably exhausted at having to actually get up and walk 15 metres down the road. Not wishing to exert the poor guy any further we walked away and started taking photos around the other side of the building and noticed another bemused looking man with camera in hand wondering why some man in uniform had just accused him of being a nose picker. Needless to say when I got home I checked the internet to find that Canary Wharf and many other seemingly public places are indeed private property where photography is banned for security reasons. Now I don’t want to give any clues to budding terrorists but surely it must have occurred to someone that there is a whole host of info and pictures on the web that would make photo reconnaissance an unnecessary waste of a train ticket. At least at the expense of depriving normal law abiding citizens the right to take photos for pleasure. Anyway I am telling you all this because I have a cunning plan should any of you want to take photos on private property and you’re worried about being asked to delete all the photos by some over excited security guard. Before you leave home simply make sure the first shot on each of your storage cards is a computer screen shot of the words ‘No images’. Then show this to the uniformed representative of officialdom. If you are using a film camera simply sellotape the same thing to the back of the camera and I am sure you will get away with it, these guys really aren’t that bright you know.

My dear contacts and visitors, I made some shots of London from air with my analogue camera during my last trip. Unfortunately, the conditions (weather included) were not the best ones, but I think they can serve for better orientation for people who are not familiar with the city. In my set London you can find more photos you can use as a city map :)) London is the largest urban area and the capital of England and the United Kingdom. An important settlement for two millennia, London's history goes back to its founding by the Romans. Since its settlement, London has been part of many important movements and phenomena throughout history, such as the English Renaissance, the Industrial Revolution, and the Gothic Revival. The city's core, the ancient City of London, still retains its limited medieval boundaries; but since at least the 19th century the name London has also referred to the whole metropolis which has developed around it. Today the bulk of this conurbation forms the London region of England and the Greater London administrative area, with its own elected mayor and assembly. London is one of the world's leading business, financial, and cultural centres, and its influence in politics, education, entertainment, media, fashion and the arts all contribute to its status as a major global city. London boasts four World Heritage Sites: The Palace of Westminster, Westminster Abbey and St. Margaret's Church; the Tower of London; the historic settlement of Greenwich; and the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. The city is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, and its popularity has increased over the years due to economic growth. London's diverse population draws from a wide range of peoples, cultures, and religions, and over 300 languages are spoken within the city. As of 2006, it has an official population of 7,512,400 within the boundaries of Greater London and is the most populous municipality in the European Union. As of 2001, the Greater London Urban Area has a population of 8,278,251 and the metropolitan area is estimated to have a total population of between 12 and 14 million. The 2012 Summer Olympic Games will be held in London from 27 July to 12 August 2012, followed by the 2012 Paralympic Games from 29 August to 9 September. I hope this aerial photos of London will help you during your stay in this beautiful metropolis! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London

Balfron Towers

Balfron Towers
Made by Rhiannon Adam
I had a moment of madness earlier in the year, and had a bit of a crisis about my Polaroids - mostly because whenever I exhibit my stuff is so tiny that it takes hundreds to fill a space... This means that then they are overlooked, as there are hundreds and it's overwhelming. So I tried to think big, and I'm not good at thinking big these days after thinking small for so long... My very own Impossible Project. After a failed attempt at a huge landscape shot on PX680, and tearing my hair out over it, I settled on trying to incorporate many of the things my photography is about into one piece. I had a deadline- July 7th, when I had an exhibition scheduled. So this was born...it's an A1 sized Polaroid emulsion lift montage/collage/mosaic, or whatever you want to call it! Balfron Tower is a thing of beauty to me, though many would beg to differ. It was a rehearsal building for Goldfinger's Trellick Tower in North knesington. This monolithic structure was built in the 1960s and is now a listed building. We drive past it often when heading to Emma's family. i always wonder what life must be like in one of London's few true high rise residential buildings, one that now overlooks the Olympic Park. I am sure the social housing will soon be turfed out, and this building will be reconditioned and sold to bankers at premium prices due to its proximity to Canary Wharf, but until then, it's a housing project. It also plays host to a whole raft of artists, all equally inspired by its brutal elegance. The rest of the piece was shot in Denmark, Hamburg, Whitehall, Whitstable (Kent), London's South Bank, Wales, Dungeness, London City Airport, the Barbican, and Buckingham Palace... and manybe a few more. It took me a couple of months of shooting and compositing. All I can say is that I'm relieved it's over!

2007 FTO Calendar cover photo of my modified Mitsubishi FTO GPX. Shot at Canary Whalf, London. I am so soo stoked!!! This photo was chosen to be the cover of the 2007 FTO Owners Club Calendar. Amazingly the same car was chosen for last years cover but dressed up in veilside This shot worked out so well, I thought I had a good shot in the bag when I started to pack up at 2am in the morning after almost an hour at this site. I had been waiting long periods of time for cars coming out of canary whalf which was kinda crazy but I just loved the composition of the shot and was happy to wait. As I was putting the camera in the bag I look up to see the 2am night bus about to head this way!!! SHHITTTTT - throw the camera back on the tripod and hit the button - I watched as this beast sweeped past me, i remotely unlocked my car for the correct amount of seconds to get the right level of interior blue light (Something I had got good at) and 60 full seconds later the shutter closed. If you could have seen me when I saw the tiny 2 inch preview you would have laughed!! I had finally got it. So what you are seeing is not whichcraft or alien lazer beams but simply the lights from the interoir of the upper level of the bus - Bo! Floating Bridge in Canary Wharf, London

Floating Bridge in Canary Wharf, London
Made by John Quintero
The bridge links two areas of very different scale. On the one side a vast commercial development and on the other the more delicate proportions of 19th century warehouses and a quayside piazza. By creating a low floating structure emphasis is placed on the horizontal stretch of water rather than the vertical dominance of Canary Wharf. The slender form is evocative of a brightly coloured insect touching the water as lightly as a water skater, allowing pedestrians to feel the water as they cross. Colour is central to the concept – like a laser beam of light the bridge skims the dock with a piercing lime green line, the sense of perspective exaggerated by the tapering plan of the deck. Canary Wharf is a large business and shopping development in London, located in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, centred on the old West India Docks in the London Docklands. Rivalling London's traditional financial centre, The Square Mile, Canary Wharf contains the UK's three tallest buildings: One Canada Square (sometimes known as the Canary Wharf Tower) at 235.1 m (774 ft); followed by 8 Canada Square and the Citigroup Centre, both at 199.5 m (654 ft).[1] However, according to the official Canary Wharf website,[2][3][4] One Canada Square is 800 ft (244 m). Canary Wharf is a major business district located in London, United Kingdom. Canary Wharf is one of London's two main financial centres, alongside the traditional City of London, and contains many of the UK's tallest buildings, including the second tallest (and tallest completed), One Canada Square. Canary Wharf contains around 14,000,000 square feet (1,300,000 m2) of office and retail space, of which around 7,900,000 square feet (734,000 m2) is owned by Canary Wharf Group. Around 90,000 people work in Canary Wharf and it is home to the world or European headquarters of numerous major banks, professional services firms and media organisations including Barclays, Citigroup, Clifford Chance, HSBC, Skadden and Thomson Reuters. Canary Wharf is located in the West India Docks on the Isle of Dogs in the Borough of Tower Hamlets in East London. The West India Docks once formed part of the busiest port in the world. After the docks were closed in 1980 the British Government adopted various policies to stimulate the redevelopment of the area, including through the creation of the London Docklands Development Corporation in 1981 and granting the Isle of Dogs Enterprise Zone status in 1982. In 1987 the Canadian company Olympia and York agreed to construct a major office development on the Isle of Dogs, with construction commencing in 1988.

Nikon D300 Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8 .9 ND Grad ............................................. North Greenwich is a 19th century name for the southern tip of the Isle of Dogs, located in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. It was named for the now defunct North Greenwich railway station (1872), that served a former passenger ferry to Greenwich and stood near the later Island Gardens (1897) and Greenwich foot tunnel (1902) [1]. It faces Greenwich over the River Thames and the area is now more usually known as South Millwall. It should not be confused with the northern part of the Greenwich peninsula in South London, formerly known as East Greenwich that lies south of the river and is the site of the The O2 (formerly the Millennium Dome). The opening in 1999 of the North Greenwich tube station on London Underground's Jubilee Line has now led to this area being known colloquially as North Greenwich. - Wikipedia ............................................. Balfron Tower, Poplar

Balfron Tower, Poplar
Made by jordi.martorell
Balfron Tower is a 27-storey housing block in the Poplar district of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets in the East End of London, United Kingdom. ... Since 1998 Balfron Tower has been a Grade II* listed building. Balfron Tower was designed by architect Ernő Goldfinger and ... is associated with the Brutalist style of 1960s architecture. Both Balfron and Trellick towers are often regarded as striking or ugly. Goldfinger himself was pleased with the design and moved in to flat 130, on the 26th floor, for two months in 1968 to find out what the residents liked and disliked about his design. What he learnt was applied to the design of Trellick Tower... Balfron Tower is 84 metres high and contains 146 flats. Lifts serve all entry floors (that is every third floor); thus, to reach a flat on the 11th, 12th or 13th floors, residents or visitors would take a lift to the 12th. The lift shaft sits in a separate service tower, joined to the residential tower by the seven walkways visible in the picture. (Wikipedia) The Balfron Tower was featured heavily in the film 28 Days Later where two survivors had successfully fortified it and holed up.

Patent House, Fawe Street, Explore #19, March 7, 2008. Located in Poplar, East London is the former factory site of dog-food pioneer James Spratt, built in 1899. An American electrician, Spratt saw the chewy gristle meal that London market porters made for their dogs and realised the commercial potential for canning and baking his own versions. Brands such as Bonio resulted, and the business also diversified into food for other pets. Before 1914 the factory also made food for human consumption under the Poplar brand. In the Boer War 4 million biscuits a week were made for the British Army. Spratts was one of the most heavily marketed brands in the early 20th century, with heavy recognition of the brand through clever logo development, lifestyle advertising and support through devices such as cigarette cards. Today, the factory is a well-preserved site with about 100 live-work units called Limehouse Cut, after the canal running along the northern edge. Much of the original markings are visible on the buildings, with names painted on the DLR track-side walls, and on the visible from Morris Road.

Poplar DLR Station, London - 31st October 2009 17:18 The futuristic designed cylindrical footbridge at Poplar DLR (Docklands Light Railway) station in London, taken as darkness falls onto the Docklands area of London. Poplar station lies in the centre of the DLR network and is served by most routes. The original lines of the DLR were built on a shoe-string budget and were opened at the end of August 1987 - pre-dating Canary Wharf Tower by four years. As the Docklands soon become the world financial district that it now is the lines have been redesigned, stations and trains lengthened, new routes added and services increased. The DLR now comprises of 19 miles of track (up from 8 miles); 40 stations (up from 15); and carries in excess of 60 million passengers a year. Led Zeppelin are my all time favourite. When I was 16 my ambition in life was to marry Jimmy Page! Well I was 16. They had broken up by the time I'd discovered them so I always thought that I would never see them play live. Even when they announced that they would play at the Ahmet Ertegun tribute concert I thought that I'd never get a ticket. 20 million people applied for tickets, only 18,000 tickets were available. I didn't get one. But my brother-in-law did, he was taking my nephew. I must say I was so envious that they got tickets but also delighted, especially for my nephew who is 14 and a crazy Zeppelin fan already. Then last Wednesday night my brother-in-law asked me would I like to go to the concert instead of him. I cried like a 16 year old. I couldn't believe my luck. So thanks to my amazing and very generous brother-in-law I saw my idol live on stage and he was amazing. I can't thank you enough Mark you are the best brother -in -law in the world. xx

Sula, all time favourite record James Blunt, You're Beautiful and Goodbye Lover. Canary Wharf, London. Sula was with her friend Catrina and their 2 young children in the shopping complex in Canary Wharf after watching the London Marathon. As soon as I saw Sula I knew I wanted to photograph her, and I really like when I get that gut feeling, that instant recognition that someone looks right, dynamic in this instance. Sula was great to photograph, laughing at it all with Catrina then posing really well with a cool elegance and inner confidence that originally caught my eye. Catrina's partner is a photographer and she was talking about photography in a really good and interesting way and I suggested that she should take it up, and I hope she does. View On Black A very nice - despite the cold wind! (and, well, this is supposed to be the summer start in britain!, gosh!!! ;-D) - walk in Canary Wharf - thank you boss for having being such a good guide for us! Difficult to find a shot to start with, after three days of taking pics of beautiful and silly architectures - but I love this one: it's a different one - no reflections, but a very sober and elegant design underlined by the delicate and beautiful tones. Yes, I'm [slowly!] back :-)))

View On Black Sometimes there are shots that are not so special - not perfect, noisy, somehow common - like this one - nothing special, very noisy (also because it has been taken on the train) - may be, yes, common - but - I love it - even if I can't explain exactly why - it's atmosphere remind me of some paintings, or some 60's (or 50's?) shots (and that's the reason why I have tried also the b&w version) - I like its tones, a little bit melancholic, I like the place, and the moment, and - oh, well, I just love it! :-) enjoy your week end.

This trip to London happened to co-incide with the day the Markets went into serious meltdown (well, for the first time during the current Credit Crunch) and yet wandering around Canary Wharf it was not immediately obvious. The mood seemed quite jovial and come mid-afternoon everyone seemed to have left work and the pubs and bars were full. I suspect there was less Champagne being drunk than usual though. Here I've used Topaz Adjust to give a pseudo-HDR feel as I love the tones it produces on the buildings facades.

I've had enough of the Canary Wharf shots now - planning a natural retreat to the last of the Stanton Drew images tomorrow, so thought I might as well finish up with a final one from that escalator that went down so well last time... (even though it is in fact coming up!). This one is a different composition, with higher contrast and a drop in the lighting...same hazards though: hand held, 200ISO, flash off on a point & shoot, and yes, as before the escalator was still moving and it was night-time.

We realized the the day was slowly drawing to a close as we drifted over the Thames toward St. Paul's. A brief chat on how to cap off the day's tour, and it was decided that we should head over to London's newer architectural enclave, Canary Wharf. Glass and steel awaited in abundance. Shortly after taking this photo, we were approached by police, who politely advised us not to use our cameras in the area. There were many officers patrolling the area. [#12 of series ...]
