Magical Blue Hour at the Grand Canal

Magical Blue Hour at the Grand Canal
Made by setholiver1
the Grand Canal of Venice is the largest canal in this magical place and is shaped like a backward S and is approximately 2 miles long...it ends right around the area of my previous posting which is between San Marco and Punta Della Dogana area...the length of the canal is lined with majestic Pallazos that were grand in size and decor...this frame was shot from on top of the Ponte de l' Accademia bridge or also known as the Salute Bridge on the San Marco side of Venice's many neighborhoods...once you cross the bridge over towards the right side of this frame, it becomes the Dorsoduro neighborhood...the big dome in the middle is the church of La Salute...you can also see some nice light trails of Vaporettis or water taxis just lazily cruising down the canal ferrying passengers up and down the waterways of Venice...pls.

Only in Venice of Course!

Only in Venice of Course!

I took this shot while in Venice. This was one of the few times that it stopped raining for a long enough time that I could get a shot off. This was a beautiful place to go and if you are ever in Italy you need to make it a stop. The random side streets that are in Venice are fun to wander and get lost in. I am hoping to go back another time, but also I hope for better weather when I do go back... not having light of any kind doesn't really help when you want to take pictures of the place! And a downpour of rain doesn't help either... :) Shot this with my canon 30D and 10-22mm -- cropped it to an 8x10 ratio and sharpened it some. Venecia (Italia). Puente de la Academia.
Made by josemazcona

Venice - Grand Canal

Venice - Grand Canal

A fascinating city between sea and sky, like Venus rising from the waves, Venice welcomes tourists from the five continents drawn to her by the charm of her water, pellucid light and coolness of the sea breezes. She also offers the intellectual pleasures to be derived from her masterpieces which mark the meeting of East and West. Venice is built on 117 islands; it has 150 canals and 400 bridges. A canal is called a rio, a square a campo, a street a calle or salizzada, a quay a riva or fondamenta, a filled-in canal rio Terra, a passageway under a house sotto-portego, a courtyard a corte and a small square a campiello.

The Grand Canal (Italian: Canal Grande, Venetian: Canałasso) is a canal in Venice, Italy. It forms one of the major water-traffic corridors in the city. Public transport is provided by water buses (Italian: vaporetti) and private water taxis, and many tourists explore the canal by gondola. At one end the canal leads into the lagoon near Santa Lucia railway station and the other end leads into Saint Mark Basin: in between it makes a large S-shape through the central districts (sestieri) of Venice. It is 3,800 m long, 30–90 m wide, with an average depth of five meters (16.5 ft).

Looking towards southern end of Grand Canal and Chiesa della Salute - Church of Santa Maria della Salute. In October of 1630, after nearly a third of Venice's 150,000 citizens had been killed by plague, the Venetian Senate made an offer to God: Stop the plague, and we'll build a church to honor the Virgin Mary. I was looking for something for the competition and the subject is “ Night “ and I wondered off to Venice. It seams that every time I open files from Venice I find something that I missed before. What I miss the most it the Venice itself. I would love to go back

Gondolas again and again

Gondolas again and again
Made by Sokleine
The gondola is the traditional, flat-bottomed Venetian rowing boat, well suited to the conditions of the Venetian Lagoon. For centuries gondolas were once the chief means of transportation and most common watercraft within Venice. In modern times the iconic boats still have a role in public transport in the city, serving as traghetti (ferries) over the Grand Canal. They are also used in special regattas (rowing races) held amongst gondoliers. Their primary role, however, is to carry tourists on rides at established prices. Source: Wikipedia

I had checked our other Flickr members shots of Venice before we left and some of the most dramatic were from this bridge. The shot Kinga was taking here is stunning. We spent three days running across film crews. We thought getting up at 05:00 on bholiday was bad enough to get the lighting but the camera woman perched on the step ladder at the top of the bridge had been up there sunce two a.m. Venice is a stunning place , especially if you are a photographer. We can confirm it doesn't smell in winter :)

Le ragazze fanno grandi sogni forse peccano di ingenuità ma l'audacia le riscatta sempre non le fa crollare mai. Le ragazze sono come fiori profumati di fragilità ma in amore sono come querce.... This was an experiment - my first long exposure shot ever (new ND filter!). It was so busy, and the Grand Canal was so incredibly hectic all the time, I wanted to see what it might look like if it were calm. Pretty pleased with it - apart from the flare in the top left, I like how the light came out (this is SOOC). Not sure why the flare is there though - the sun is coming from the right hand side of the shot. Also not sure how to tone that bright spot down - any ideas?

On , April 26, 2009 __________________________________________________________________ This view is towards the end of the Grand Canal. To all, sorry for the blurry parts of the photo, those are rain droplets carried by the wind. I had many shots from this point, but this is the one with the less smudge, so this is the one I'm posting. Grand Canal Venice, Veneto, Italy

Can't wait to kiss Berlin's muddy snow goodbye :-) See you all next month, i'll try to bring the sun home with me m

Needed a change from flower pics and thought I'd dig through the 5,500 photos from the most recent trip to Venice. I'm still putting them altogether in a special book, it's taking me ages to organise. With any luck I'll have it finished after Easter. Anyway, here's a nice pic, processed, from The Grand Canal.

A lone gondola at the Grand Canal. Venezia, Italia. Cross Processed. I know the composition is tilted and its intentional. It might not work for everyone but it does for me. I lined up the horizon here instead of the rows like I usually do. View big
