Pont Royal (Royal Bridge), known for a a long time as pont des Tuileries, crosses 110 meters over the Seine River. Constructed from 1685 to 1689 by Jules Hardouin-Mansart, Père Romain and Jacques Gabriel, it is one of the three oldest bridges in Paris and one of the only one not required to link districts of the city. None of the roads to which it leads are a direct continuation of the bridge. Pont Royal was predated by Barbier's 1632 wooden bridge, called Saint-Anne, but nicknamed Pont Rouge (Red Bridge) for its color. When Saint-Anne burned down, Louis XIV financed its stone replacement. In the 18th century, big Parisian festivals and celebrations were held here. The nautical festival held on the occasion of the marriage of Elisabeth of France and the Infante Philip of Spain attracted 500,000 people to the banks and bridges. It was on this bridge - called National from 1792 to 1804 - that Bonaparte placed the cannons used for the defense of the Tuileries where the Convention and the Comité de Salut Public (Committee of Public Safety) used to sit. On the last stretch of each bank the water level marker that showed the historic low- and high-water marks can be seen. The bridge is 17 meters wide and features five fully curved semicircular masonry arches with spans of 20, 22, 23, 22, and 20 meters. The foundations are built on piles beaten inside cofferdams.
