Passerelle des Arts (Footbridge of the Arts), also referred to as Pont des Arts (Bridge of the Arts), inaugurated on June 27, 1984, stretches across 155m of the River Seine, connecting pedestrian traffic between l'Institut de France in the 1st arrondissment and the the palais du Louvre's Cour Carré in the 6th arrondissment. Under the First Empire, the Louvre was called Palais de Arts, lending the bridge its name. The first footbridge at the site was opened in 1804, under First Consul Napoleon. Designed by the engineers Louis-Alexandre de Cessart and Jacques Lacroix-Dillon, it was the first metal bridge on the Seine and carried a one-penny toll until 1848. Although it was rebuilt during the Second Empire, the original structure was too light and its nine arches obstructed river traffic. After suffering much damage from barge collisions in 1961 and 1970, and bombing over two World Wars, it was closed in 1977. It lost 60 meters in a collision in 1979 and was demolished in 1980. A 4-year reconstruction project, according to the plans of Louis Arretche, raised a new bridge, this time out of steel instead of cast-iron and with 7 arches instead of nine.
