The Bâtiment des Forces Motrices sits on the river Rhône, very close to the source of the river at Lake Geneva (Lac Léman). In September 1882 the Grand Conseil of the Canton and Republic of Geneva granted permission to the City of Geneva to use the hydraulic power of the Rhône. Built between 1883 and 1892, machines in this building pumped drinking water to the city and environs until the 1960s. The building now serves as a theatre.
