Visitors to the great Czech capital, distracted by the astonishing range of styles and shapes and colors of the city's architecture, too rarely consider the beauty of the stones on which they stand. Prague's cobble-stones are complex in their rhythmic mix of granite and basalt, cubes small enough to soothe the soles and playfully patterned to please the eye. The widening vee at the right of this image contradicts perspective along a sidewalk; the moire design on the street itself is equally disconcerting, in the most enjoyable possible way.
