Lucie with our newfound friends at the Cairo Citadel

As we walked towards the Cairo Citadel from Khan El-Khalili, we ran across these two nice lads who started talking with us in relatively good English giving us some tips as to what we might want to see in the old Islamic quarter. Their names were Mahamed Aly and Abdalla. Turns out that they were university students in Cairo wanting to practice their English. Such interaction with the locals happened on several occasions during our trip. We found this very pleasant and, at times, critically helpful, like one time near Assiout, when we couldn't find our hotel after driving around town three or four times. Turns out that the hotel was 5 km outside the city. One good Samaritan pointed us in the right direction, but when he realized that I was still unsure of how to get there, he offered to come with us all the way to the hotel. Then, when I wanted to drive him back to the city, he simply told us not to bother and that he would walk back. Of course, I gave him a tip, but I must say that I haven't seen this kind of civility very often before or since! Scanned from a Kodachrome slide using a Nikon Super Coolscan 5000 scanner.
