The Point Montara Lighthouse first saw service from 1881 to 1922 at Mayo Beach on Cape Cod. For years, it was believed that the Mayo Beach tower had been destroyed after the light was discontinued in 1922, but while conducting research for a lighthouse book, Colleen MacNeney came across a 1928 photograph of a tower in Yerba Buena, California with the following inscription: This tower formerly used at Mayo Beach, 2d District. This discovery prompted MacNeney to dig deeper, and she eventually found correspondence in the National Archives that proved that in 1928 the Mayo Beach tower was sent from Massachusetts to Yerba Buena and then to Point Montara. Standing only 30 feet high, the lighthouse is short by most standards, but good for keeping the beam beneath the fog. footnote: ref. www.lighthousefriends.com/light.asp?ID=78

Point Montara Lighthouse was established in February 1875. It originally had a kerosene lantern, but was upgraded in 1912 to a fourth order Fresnel lens. The current tower was first erected in 1881 in Wellfleet, Massachusetts as the Mayo Beach Lighthouse. In 1925, the cast iron tower from the discontinued Mayo Beach Light was disassembled and moved to Yerba Buena. It was moved and rebuilt as the Point Montara Light station in 1928, where it stands today[1]. The lens was transferred to the San Mateo Historical Society when the lighthouse was automated in 1970, and is currently on display at the library at the College of Notre Dame in Belmont, California. The Montara Youth Hostel is next to Highway One, about 25 miles south of San Francisco. A small plane was entirely constructed from driftwood. Beautiful views included, you're right next to the ocean, and it is not expensive, but you have to deal with reservations long in advance: www.norcalhostels.org/montara/ We'll be staying there next week, and look forward to perhaps catching a glimpse of the meteorite showers happening these days. Provided the fog permits any view...

The wind was very strong and wild. I decided to pull in the camera when i saw the kite dive wildly several times. Glad I did cuz seconds after I removed the KAP rig and camera, the kite dove down onto the cliff's edge. Also the suspension string to the picavet cross untied when I was packing it up. Several dodged bullets. Thew waves were huge.

Point Montara Lighthouse, CA This light originally stood on the east coast at Mayo's Beach in Massachusetts. When that station was decommissioned the tower was taken down, transported to the west coast by barge and reassembled at Point Montara.

The present light dates back to 1928, and was originally the Mayo Beach Light on Cape Cod in Massachusetts. It was dismantled and moved to California, but for the longest time, people thought it had been torn down or lost.
