Fern and Sunny Tree

Fern and Sunny Tree

What lies before us and what lies behind us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us. Ralph Waldo Emerson For my English class, I had to do an art project that reflected the principles of Transcendentalism. Specifically, it had to be accompanied by a quotation from either Henry Thoreau or Ralph Waldo Emerson. Since the Transcendentalist revere nature, I decided that beautiful Point Defiance would provide me with many subjects. I was lucky enough to pick a day when the sun decided to shine out even though it had been fairly foggy earlier in the day. This was my first attempt at producing an Orton photo. Instead of using the typical digital post-processing techniques to achieve the effect, I used the original method of taking two overexposed shots of the same scene and using the Multiply layer blending mode. I think this achieved a much more surrealistic, stunning image than any amount of Photoshop could have accomplished. The dreamy colors, the appeal of Orton photos, really makes this photo. The branches overhead, the roots on the floor, and the fern in the foreground create a stunning, spiraling circular frame, providing a pathway through which to enter the photo. The sun shining on the tree trunk emphasizes the qualities of the inner self. Strong, tough and prominent. The center of the circle reveals a path to the future. A future that is uncertain, unknown, and overgrown. You can't know what's out there. The brightly lit ferns up front, provide a glimpse of where you've come from. An over stimulated world that has begun to lose definition and meaning. My favorite photograph ever, by me or anyone else, I keep a print hanging on the wall in room and one in the front cover my binder. I still can't believe that I was able to capture this shot, that still amazes me with something new every time I look at it. If you look at it at angle, the center circle starts to spin around and makes the photo look even more like a dream.

For the first time in a while.. Owen Beach, Tacoma, Washington Short story; less than 2 minutes after taking this, I got hit by the ball the dog was fetching. The owner didn't have the best aim and the ball hit me really hard in the leg. Plus, the ball was wet after being thrown into the Sound.. yeah, it hurt. I guess she didn't like me taking a photo with her dog in it.

They do not want flash photography taken of the sea horses, so had to play with the settings to try to get a good photo. This is the raw photo. I may edit it later.
