French merry-go-rounds are anything but merry; imagine every slightly odd French film, complete with screeching and groaning anachronistically mechanical things moving for the sake of it (it even plays shuddering about-to-break noises). No wonder they make such unflappable adults; they're all still in shock from childhood.
