Henryk Pobożny (Henry II the Pious), the stained glass made according to Stanisław Wyspiański's design (Pavilion Wyspiański 2000 in Kraków). The stained glass windows of Stanisław Wyspiański design (1900-1901) St. Stanislaus of Szczepanów, Henry II the Pious and Casimir III the Great, designed for the Wawel Cathedral in Kraków, were not accepted by the Chapter’s officials for implementation in glass “due to the absence of complex thought in them”, and they only saw light of day in the windows of the Pavilion Wyspiański 2000, founded by the City of Kraków and opened to the public in 2007. Henry II the Pious (ca. 1196/1207 – 1241) was a Piast Duke of Silesia-Wrocław, Kraków and Southern Greater Poland from 1238 until his death. During 1238–1239 he served as a regent of two Piast Duchies: Sandomierz and Opole-Raciborz. He lived and ruled during the 200-years long period of fragmentation of the Kingdom of Poland (The Fragmentation was a result of a very unfortunate testament of King Boleslaus III, who had divided the Kingdom into five principalities). Henry II the Pious, a talented politician, might have had a chance to reunite the lands of the Kingdom long before it was eventually done in 1320 with the coronation of Ladislaus I the Elbow-high, but the Mongol Invasion 1241-1242 put an end to his plans. On 9 April 1241 at Legnica, a combined force of Poles and Germans (approx. 7,000 men, including 1,000 heavy knights) under the command of Duke Henry II the Pious of Silesia, supported by small contingents of the Knights Templar and Hospitallers, attempted to halt the Mongol invasion of Europe, but were defeated by the invaders commanded by Ordu Khan. Henry II the Pious was killed during the battle, which had a disastrous effect for his Duchy, and was also a very unlucky incident for the Kingdom. According to Historia Tartarorum, one of the very few reliable sources concerning the battle, he was taken prisoner and told to kneel before a body of a Mongol prince, who had been killed earlier by Polish defenders of Sandomierz. Since Henry refused to do so, he was beheaded, and his head was sent to a Mongol leader Batu Khan who was commanding the other army devastating Hungary at the same time. Henry's legend as the ideal of Christian knighthood and Defensor fidei Christiane was born shortly after the battle, and is still alive in a way.

Kazimierz Wielki (Casimir the Great), the stained glass made according to Stanisław Wyspiański's design (Pavilion Wyspiański 2000 in Kraków). Casimir III the Great (1310-1370) was the son of Ladislaus the Elbow-high and Poland's only king with the cognomen Great. He completed the work of the reunification of the state which under his rule more than doubled its size. He attached great importance to economic development. He contributed to the development of the towns and commerce, carried out a monetary reform and sanctioned a code of laws for Great and Lesser Poland, which gained for him the title of the Polish Justinian. Under his reign, approximately 50 castles were built across Poland, and 27 towns were surrounded by protective walls. Casimir III also built churches and granted land rights to nobles who occupied both high and low ranks. In 1364, he established the Krakow Academy, the first Polish university. In foreign policy, in spite of some opposition, he was in favour of compromise, for he believed that Poland needed internal stability and peace. The successful rule of Casimir the Great was burdened with a personal and dynastic failure; despite having been married a couple of times the king had no lawful son. Therefore, conflicts over the succession could threaten the integrity of the Kingdom. In 1339, in Visegrad, he concluded a treaty with the allied Kingdom of Hungary, under which the throne was to pass to the Angevins in the event of his childless death. When Casimir, the last Piast king of Poland, died in 1370, his nephew King Louis I of Hungary succeeded him to become king of Poland in personal union with Hungary.

Franciscan Church Krakow The Franciscan Church/Monastery;Klasztor Franciszkanow was founded by Duke Henry the Pious for monks coming from Prague. A single-nave Greek cruciform church was constructed in 1269, a sacristy, side chapels and cloisters being added on later. Wladyslaw Lokietek made a dramatic escape from the monastery in a basket lowered over the city walls. Wladyslaw Jagiello - the pagan Lithuanian chosen by the Poles as their king - was baptised and then crowned here in 1386.Several fires caused the collapse of the tower and destroyed the mediaeval furnishings. The present neo-Gothic interior contains magnificent Art Nouveau stained glass and wall paintings of flowers forming a hymn to St.Francis (in the chapel and transept) by Stanislaw Wyspianski, carried out after the disastrous city fire of 1850. The northern chapel contains Stations of the Cross painted by Jozef Mehoffer(who was strongly influenced by Van Gogh). The remains of Boleslaw the Bashful, Duke of Krakow (who issued the city's foundation charter in 1257), his sister Salome and Piotr Kochanowski are buried in the church. The monastery cloisters contain a gallery of portraits of the Bishops of Krakow. The monastery itself was the home of St. Maximilian Kolbe before his deportation to, and martyrdom at Auschwitz.

Franciscan Church & tram Krakow

Franciscan Church & tram Krakow

The Franciscan Order arrived in Cracow in 1237. A monastery was founded on this site, and in 1260 work began on a church. Forty years later, King Ladislas the Short made a swashbuckling escape from here in a basket - the city was being bombarded by the dastardly King Wenceslas of Bohemia, who rather liked the idea of adding Cracow to his kingdom. After many skirmishes, the Polish monarch took refuge in the Ojcow valley, where he holed himself up in a cave. The Czechs searched high and low for the escapee, but as legend recounts, a huge spider's web concealed the door of the cave, and this put the hunters off the scent. Six years later, having regrouped his forces, Ladislas made good his return and reconquered Cracow. He left the kingdom stronger than it had ever been, setting the stage for his son, Kazimierz, who continued the job, and was later dubbed 'the Great'.

download So much for getting this one uploaded last night! The vintage-looking vignette made me think of all the faded and overexposed old photographs that I've seen over the years and this is my sorry attempt of replicating it. Kraków is a really awesome city and looking through these shots really makes me want to go back to Poland! Stare Miasto means old town and these shots were taken in various places of that section of the city. If you use the preset, please credit me and link back to this page. I'd love to see what you do with it, so feel free to post a small image in the comments. Thanks for taking a look!
