The economic prosperity of the Asia-Pacific region in the 90s has created no less attentions to Confucianism for it was regarded as the cultural background conducive for entrepreneurs of this region to excel. Some scholars even believe that a Confucian Revival is at hand and propose the 21st Century to be the Confucian Century. Although the causes of economic growth and success are complex and likely to vary from one country to another, the significance of culture has been emphasized. Hicks and Redding commented, as there are well over a hundred developing countries, the almost perfect correlation between Chinese heritage and economic success could hardly be due to chance. Another study by Gordon Redding on the spirit of Chinese capitalism suggested a strong link between Confucian values and modern overseas Chinese business enterprises. However, when the same region triggered a globally felt economic crisis two years ago, fingers were also pointed at Confucianism, naming it as the culprit behind the downfall of Chinese entrepreneurship. Further, people often loosely refer to Confuciamsm or Asian Values when analyzing factors relevant to the economy and social matters. They do so without first synthesizing the system of thought upon which they base their claims, thereby weakening their arguments. Moreover, studies on Chinese values are certainly insufficient if not misconstrued by scholars with no Chinese background, How then does Confucianism influence Asian countries? Do traditional Chinese values still exist in modern Chinese societies? Based on the publications by scholars in the past few years, the approach to these questions varies between institutionalism and culturalism. Yet, as Yang Kuo-shu points out, in this age of rapid global development, we can no longer be over-concerned with nebulous and abstract issues; rather, we should discuss modernization directly at the level of the real world, basing ourselves on actual observable phenomena... The Pinakothek der Moderne is a modern art museum, situated in the city centre of Munich, Germany. Together with the Alte Pinakothek, the Neue Pinakothek and Museum Brandhorst it is part of Munich's Kunstareal (the art district). The window in the background belongs to the Alte Pinakothek. Designed by the German Architect Stephan Braunfels, the Pinakothek der Moderne was inaugurated in September 2002 after seven years of construction. The rectilinear facade, dominated by white and grey concrete, is interrupted by large windows and highrising columns, the latter supporting the extensive canopied roof. Each of the four corners of the building, connected by a central rotunda, is dedicated to a special collection.

I had to lighten the walls by about 2.5 stops and manually adjust the white balance, to get the bright look. Just a bit of straightening was needed and i corrected the distortion with PTLens (always recommended for architectural shots), eventhough i used the Sigma 12-24mm, which produces only a very small amount of distortion, even at 12mm

going green

Is it possible to pursue alternative, renewable energy while at the same time stimulating the economy? Well, it certainly seems to be working for Germany’s burgeoning wind energy industry! A recent article in Businessweek highlighted German’s windmill generators. According to the article, 7% of the nation’s power and electrical needs are generated from the wind power harvested by these windmills. Further, because of favorable regulation of the industry, “Germany has become a global powerhouse in green energy, producing more electricity from wind than any other country.” When the global atmosphere is telling us to “go green,” smart business minds will take that imperative seriously and find ways to profit at the same time. Germany’s wind industry has proven that a successful partnership between green energy alternatives and economic stimulation is possible. Other nations would to well to learn from this example, and green alternatives are proving to be a responsible and profitable solution. ...taken at the Pinakothek der Moderne... Munich, Germany...

Young-Jae Lee 1111 Gefäße

Young-Jae Lee 1111 Gefäße
Made by Soverico
On the floor of the second storey of the Rotunda in the Pinakothek der Moderne the Korean ceramicist Young-Jae Lee has arranged 1111 china bowls to form an unusual installation: Though initially each bowl stands for itself, the juxtaposition of the many bowls stimulates a dialogue between the individual object and the group around it. Each of the bowls has been hand-made by Young-Jae Lee. In concrete terms the theme of the installation deals with its form, colour, volume and shape. From the arrangement in the room there emerges a rhythm created by the differences in size, width, colour, light and shade. The individual bowl refers to the assembly of bowls as a complete entity, only to relate back to itself or to another bowl. This directs the gaze and attention of the viewer to following the patterns of inter-relationships. www.pinakothek.de/pinakothek-der-moderne/html/kalender/ka...

First car designed for aerodynamic purposes. Its streamlined shape was designed by Dr Hans Ledwinka. The Tatra T87 was a car built by Czechoslovak manufacturer Tatra. It was praised by German officers in World War II for the superior speed and handling it offered for use on the Autobahn. It was powered by a rear-mounted 2.9 litre air-cooled 90-degree overhead cam V8 engine that produced 85 horsepower and could drive the car at nearly 100 mph (161 km/h). The Nazi armaments and munitions minister Dr Fritz Todt declared: This 87 is the Autobahn car ... A flat-four cylinder 'boxer' engine version of the T87 also debuted in 1936. www.youtube.com/watch?v=hdxYXpPhhjY Pinakothek Der Moderne / Munich

Guard #1: So then, if you spot me coming around that corner...you just gonna walk out on this woman? Not say good bye? Guard #2: That's the discipline. Guard #1: That's pretty vacant, you know. Guard #2: Yeah, it is what it is. It's that or we both better go do something else, pal. Guard #1: I don't know how to do anything else. Guard #2: Neither do I. Guard #1: I don't much want to either. How old do you think you are? Young Lady: Twenty-two! I can show you my birth certificate. Guard: I'm afraid you're going to have to show more than your birth certificate to convince a man of that.
