Sword-billed Hummingbird, female
Made by Pia's birdseye view
Photgraphed at Yanacocha in Ecuador, Aug 2005. A little note about the loooong bill is long overdue. This is the only bird in the world with a bill longer than its body. It cannot preen itself with it, it has to use its feet. I've seen film on TV (David Attenborough's eminent series Life of Birds), long before I saw the bird itself, of a preening Sword-bill. It was filmed from behind, so it was looking over its shoulder into the camera, as cool as a cucumber, while those flesh-colored feet were busy flickering over the body and wings. It looked hilarious, like one little pinkish squirrel on amfetamin was dashing along the bird's body, one side at a time... I've wanted so badly to see that for myself, but haven't scored totally yet. At Guango Lodge I saw a male starting up, but when he caught me staring at him and rise my camera he was off to a more private place for his going-on's. This, my all-time favorite photo, made it to #146 in Explore July 31:st.

Golden-breasted Puffleg
Made by Pia's birdseye view
I got sidetracked by the rare visitor at the higher feeders; the Sapphire-vented Puffleg, and turned to it every time it showed up. I didn't know then that they are numerous on the feeders closer to the parkinglot, but the Golden-breasted don't stray down there. Because of that I just got 2 or 3 photos of this hummer, that has a rather restricted distribution. A typical example of bad priorities, ho-hum. This is the best photo I got of the Golden-breasted PL. Photographed at Yanacocha, western slope of N Ecuador, Aug 2005.

Black-chested Mountain-Tanager
Made by Pia's birdseye view
Found at Yanacocha, Feb 14 2005. Not the most common Mountain-Tanager up there. A pity that I didn't get anything but this frogseye-view of things, but beggars can't be choosers. And he was high up so I had to use maximum magnification to make him see-able at all.

Andean Guan
Made by Pia's birdseye view
No doubt he was playing the game Let's pretend I'm not here but Guans are so noicy, you can't help hearing them. And when there's sound there's a possibility to get a visual... As I did, indeed. Yanacocha, N Ecuador, Aug 14 2005.
