Piccadilly Circus is a famous road junction and public space of London's West End in the City of Westminster, built in 1819 to connect Regent Street with the major shopping street of Piccadilly. In this context, a circus, from the Latin word meaning circle, is a round open space at a street junction. Piccadilly now links directly to the theatres on Shaftesbury Avenue, as well as the Haymarket, Coventry Street (onwards to Leicester Square), and Glasshouse Street. The Circus is close to major shopping and entertainment areas in the West End. Its status as a major traffic intersection has made Piccadilly Circus a busy meeting place and a tourist attraction in its own right. The Circus is particularly known for its video display and neon signs mounted on the corner building on the northern side, as well as the Shaftesbury memorial fountain and statue of an archer popularly known as Eros (sometimes called The Angel of Christian Charity, but intended to be Anteros). It is surrounded by several noted buildings, including the London Pavilion and Criterion Theatre. Directly underneath the plaza is Piccadilly Circus tube station, part of the London Underground rapid transit system.

Shaftesbury Avenue is a major London street, named after Anthony Ashley Cooper, 7th Earl of Shaftesbury, that runs in a north-easterly direction from Piccadilly Circus to New Oxford Street, crossing Charing Cross Road at Cambridge Circus. Shaftesbury Avenue was created in the late 19th century (187786) to improve traffic flow. It is generally considered the heart of London's West End theatre district, with the Lyric, Apollo, Gielgud and Queen's theatres clustered together on the north side of the road between Piccadilly Circus and Charing Cross Road. At the intersection of Shaftesbury Avenue and Charing Cross Road there is also the large Palace Theatre. Finally, the north-eastern end of the road has another large theatre, literally called the Shaftesbury Theatre.

Stepping out to Angellucci's for my coffee beans/ Checking out the movies and the magazines. Waitress she watches me crossing from the Barocco Bar/ I get a pickup for my steel guitar. I saw you walking out, Shaftesbury Avenue.../ Excuse me for talking I wanna marry you. This is the seventh heaven street to me. Dont be so proud/ You're just another angel in the crowd. And I'm walking in the wild West End... (Wild West End by Dire Straits) I have loved this song for many, many years. I was very glad to make it here when we were in London. Taken by CoryQ.

A man dashes across Piccadilly Circus in a sudden thunderstorm with some of the heaviest rain I have seen in my life. It was literally a matter of minutes between this and the previous photograph in my photostream, at the same location, showing the sporadic weather on the day.

London Feb 2007 - i keep coming back to this statue, anything involving horse actually. love the power of horses. In london, they always seem in distress. I personally think it adds to a tension that ebbs over London, loads of little things do. I wan to use this in my book.

Taken just after we got off the coach! And walked through Covent Gardens. I remember coming here years ago with my parents and the whole surrounding area seemed to be much larger and more spacious. I really need to go back and do some more photography there!

Un altro punto di vista su questa piazza, le famose luci riflesse su di un tipico autobus inglese di passaggio. Another point of view on this square. The famous lights are reflected on a typical london bus.
