THB150/US$4.77. Thai curry. Despite having lived in a couple of cities with an abundance of Thai restaurants (NYC and TPE), I think it's safe to say I've never had Thai food until now. Now I'm pissed that all those years I was given bland and tepid Thai food toned down for us farangs. Chote Chitr was raved about in a recent NY Times article so I went to check it out. When I arrived around noon, it was empty save for a small family of tourists. There were English menus available and the affable owner spoke pretty good English, a far cry from the no menu, no English neighborhood restaurant described in the article. The restaurant knew there would be an onslaught of NYT readers after that article was published so they prepared. Though I think perhaps they should have purposely stayed opaque and not have an English menu to at least have the illusion of being local since that's what people who read the article and came there was expecting. Anyway, the food was great, but so was basically everything else that smelled good to me and I tried randomly in Bangkok. I don't think this was destination dining. It may be that my palate for Thai cuisine just isn't sophisticated enough to discern the very good from the merely good in Thai cooking, but to me, nothing I had during the trip stood out particularly above the rest: everything was extremely delicious, but no one restaurant/vendor was worth making that special effort to hunt down.
