Saint Petersburg Mosque

Saint Petersburg Mosque
Made by Peer.Gynt
The Saint Petersburg Mosque (Russian: Санкт-Петербу́ргская мече́ть), when opened in 1913, was the largest mosque in Europe, its minarets attaining 49 meters in height and the impressive dome rising 39 meters high. The mosque is situated in downtown St Petersburg, so its azure dome is perfectly visible from the Trinity Bridge across the Neva. It can accommodate up to five thousand worshippers. The founding stone was laid in 1910 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the reign of Abdul Ahat Khan in Bukhara. By that time, the Muslim community of the Russian capital exceeded 8,000 people. The projected structure was capable of accommodating most of them. The architect Nikolay Vasiliev patterned the mosque after Gur-e Amir, the tomb of Tamerlane in Samarkand. Its construction was completed by 1921. Worshippers are separated by gender during a worship service; females worship on the first floor, while the males worship on the ground floor. The Mosque was closed to worshippers from 1940 to 1956. History In 1882, Selim-Girei Tevkelev who in 1865 was appointed the Mufti of Orenburg turned to and obtained agreement from minister Count Tolstoy with the requirement for a mosque in St. Petersburg. In 1906, the Minister formed a special committee headed by Ahun Ataulla Bayazitov to collect 750 000 rubles within 10 years for the construction of the mosque. They organised collections in towns and providences of Russia and received donations from rich sponsors. In addition the committee input securities in total amount of 142, 000 rubles and also stamps for mosque's project. The biggest donor was Said Abdoul Ahad, Emir of Bochara who undertook all expenses for the building. The location of the mosque was symbolic, sited opposite the Peter and Paul's Fortress, in the city centre. The permission to purchase the site was given by Emperor Nicholas II in Peterhof on 3 July 1907. That autumn, the committee approved the project by architect Nikolay Vasiliev, the engineer Stepan Krichinskiy, and construction was overseen by academic Alexander von Gogen. The building facade was made by combining both oriental ornaments and turquoise blue mosaic. On 3 February 1910, the brick laying ceremony was performed by Ahun Bayazitov, attended by government, religious and social figures. Among those who attended was Amir Buharskiy, Harusin, Novikov, the ambassadors of Turkey and Persia, Sultanov the Orenburg's Muftiy, and Tevkelev, the leader of the Muslims party in the Duma . The walls were made with grey granite and the dome and both minarets (tower) are covered with mosaic ceramics of sky-light-blue colour. Skilled craftsmen from Central Asia took part working on the mosque. The facades are decorated with sayings from Koran using the characteristic Arabian calligraphy. Internal columns are made from green marble. woman pray in on the first floor, above the western part of the hall. The mosque was covered by huge special made carpets weaved by the Central Asian craftsmen. The St. Petersburg Mosque was closed and was made into a warehouse during the Second World War. At the request of the first Indonesian President, Soekarno (whilst visiting the city), the mosque was returned to the Muslim community of the city in 1956, ten days after his visit. A major restoration of a mosque was made in 1980. Wikipedia

Cathedral of Prince St. Vladimir

Cathedral of Prince St. Vladimir
Made by Oleg Mirabo
Cathedral of Prince St. Vladimir [Князь-Владимирский собор] CATHEDRAL OF PRINCE ST. VLADIMIR, (Dobrolyubova Avenue, 26 Blokhina Street), an architectural monument in a transitional style from Baroque to Classicism. The Cathedral is located on the so-called mokrushi, soggy, regularly flooded lowland. In 1708, the wooden Church of St Nicholas was constructed. In 1713-19, a brick Holy Assumption Church with three side-altars was built, which later acquired the status of a cathedral. In 1740, a stone church was built (architect M. G. Zemtsov, then P. A. Trezzini supervised the construction and completion of the building). In 1766-73, it was rebuilt according to the plans of architect A. Rinaldi. The main building was crowned with five large domes, pylons divided the interior into three naves, and the walls were sectioned off with Dorian pilasters. Close to the cathedral there is a three-tier stand-alone bell tower. The unfinished cathedral was damaged by the fires of 1772 and 1783-89 and rebuilt by architect I. E. Starov who remodelled the decor of the facades. In 1823, the gallery was built and the iconostasis was redesigned in the Empire style. In 1834, the cathedral passed to the Order of St Vladimir. In 1859-66, the side-altars were moved to the main altar. In 1872-73, a fence with two chapels was constructed (architect N. F. Brullo); in 1882-86 St. Alexander's Chapel onthe corner of Bolshoy Avenue of Petrogradskaya Side was added (architect N. N. Kovrigin). In 1926-27, the cathedral was temporarily closed, in 1938-41 it served as the metropolitan cathedral and the residence of the ruling metropolitan. From 1940 to 2001, the Cathedral housed the Icon of Our Lady of Kazan (today it is kept at Kazan Cathedral). In 1989, a jubilee medal was minted in honour of the bicentenary of the cathedral. Cruiser Avrora

Cruiser Avrora

Крейсер Аврора 1-го ранга Балтийского флота, известный своей ролью в Октябрьском вооружённом восстании в Петрограде. The Avrora is a Russian cruiser, currently preserved as a museum ship in St. Petersburg. She was one of three Pallada-class cruisers, built in St. Petersburg for a service in the Far East. All the ships of this class served during the Russo-Japanese War (1904 - 1905). In 1906 the Avrora returned to the Baltic and became a cadet training ship. During the First World War the ship operated in the Baltic Sea. At the end of 1916, the ship was moved to Saint Petersburg for a major repair. The city was brimming with revolutionary ferment and part of her crew joined the 1917 February Revolution. A revolutionary committee was created on the ship (Aleksandr Belyshev was elected its captain). Most of the crew joined the Bolsheviks, who were preparing for a Communist revolution. On 25 October 1917, the refusal of an order for the Avrora to take to sea sparked the October Revolution. A blank shot from her forecastle gun signalled the start of the assault on the Winter Palace, which was to be the last episode of the October Revolution. Avrora's crew actually took part in the attack.

Stiff breeze on the river Neva in Saint Petersburg after a heavy shower. Vista onto the opposite river bank with Hermitage (Winter Palace), Russian Admirality, Issac's Cathedral, Palace Bridge. On the Vasilievsky Island the Old Saint Petersburg Stock Exchange with one of the two red Rostral Columns. The sandy beaches underneath the fortress walls are among the most popular in St. Petersburg. In summer the beach is often overcrowded, especially when a major sand festival takes place on the shore.

She battled the Japanese Navy in the Russo-Japanese War. One of the first incidents of the Communist Revolution in Russia took place on the cruiser Aurora. At the end of 1916, the ship was moved to Saint Petersburg (later Petrograd) for a major repair. This shot has the story. I was asked to photo a reportage about municipal elections, but when I have come to the precinct, they prohibited me to shoot cause I had not the passport. So I was sadly going home when I saw the mannequen standin near the tree amongst guitars, drums and other musical stuff, and two guys preparing to play music. I asked them what they have this mannequen for and they respond me that they found her forgotten in some place and take with themselves just for eason the mannequens are expensive. After that one of the guys hanged the guitar upon the mannequen's neck and both of them bended down abd begin to look for something in the grass. This was the moment I did the shot.

When the crew of Imperial Navy cruiser Aurora mutinied and joined the supporters of V.I. Lenin turning their guns on St. Petersburg in support of the 1917 revolution, a turning point in world history had come. The sailors of the Aurora were instrumental in the begining of the Revolution which spelled the end of the Tsars. With the support of the crew, and under the guns of Aurora, St. Petersburg was doomed to fall. With it went hundreds of years of history, tradition, oppression and servitude. It marked the begining of the Communist state in Russia - soon to be the U.S.S.R. (This isn't the best scan - I hope the subject will be interesting enough to make up for it in part!)

View to the Palace Bridge (Dvortsoviy most) through the Neva river. The weather in Saint Peterburg (Russia) can change very fast. In next hour you can see bright sun and clear sky with no clouds at all. Or there can be a cold rain falling upon you. The sky here really isn't that dramatic, but it doesn't take too long to see something like that in reality.
