A view down Griswold Street in downtown Detroit on a cloudy winter day. The tall building on the left with the flagpole on top is the Guardian Building, possibly the most beautiful structure in Detroit. Built during the Detroit skyscraper boom of the 1920s, the Guardian Building was called the Cathedral of Finance for its use of gothic architecture and its ornate, cathedral-like lobby. After years of decay, the Guardian Building was recently renovated, restoring the building to its original glory. The elevated railway of the PeopleMover can be seen at the end of the street. The public transport train is considered the worst form of public transportation on the planet. It hardly works, and when it does it takes tens of minutes to arrive somewhere you could walk in only a few. The track only runs 2.5 miles in a circle, hardly extending beyond the relatively small downtown area. Finally, the city seemingly ends at the end of the road; this is due to the presence of the Detroit River just beyond the PeopleMover tracks. The Detroit River is the busiest international waterway in the world, sharing a border with Canada, and is the gateway to the largest Great Lakes: Huron, Michigan and Superior. Due to a strange geographical anomaly, Detroit actually lies due north of Canada. Detroit is the only major city of the United States to claim this distinction.

Kerry got a cool picture of what was the tallest building in Michigan from it's completion in 1928 until 1977, when the RenCen was finished. When it was completed, this 47 story building was the 8th tallest building in the world. It provided inspiration for the builders of the Empire State Building and is loved by pilots in the area for it's height as a landmark AND the fact that it faces due North. Kinda looks like something out of the Batman movies, eh?

Note the swastikas--a popular Art Deco architectural detail when this building was built, a decade before the rise of Nazi Germany.
