Remains of the Cluett-Peabody Bleachery @ Peebles Island
Made by chocolatepoint
From a press release awarding a grant to the Peebles Island historical site: Peebles Island State Park's 158 acres include several islands, two bridges and a small parcel of land in the Village of Waterford. The park property features miles of trails and views of the rapids, and is situated between two branches of the Mohawk River and the Hudson River, adjacent to Lock #2 of the Erie Canal. The park has a rich history, as it has served as the site of Native American and colonial settlements, Revolutionary War earthwork fortifications, barge and shipbuilding facilities, and an early 20th c. Cluett, Peabody & Co. shirt manufacturing complex. (Source)

Part of the Peebles Island Visitor Center @ Waterford, NY

What are we looking at, you ask? Good question. This is part of some old buillding at the historic being used as the visitors center on Peebles Island. I think I saw somewhere that the visitors center was once a power plant at Cluett-Peabody. I've got an inset from an old 1930's map that details the Cluett-Peabody complex here. I think this tower and such is the building labeled boiler room on that map.

What Happened in the Cluett-Peabody Bleachery @ Peebles Island

Pick the original size to read the explanatory sign. Among other things, it says: Cluett, Peabody & Company, a Troy-based manufacturer of men's collar and shirts, purchased Peebles Island in 1909. The abundant water, existing rail lines and proximity to the company's Troy factory made the island an ideal location for treating unfinished cloth. By early 1911, the bleachery complex was in use.

Dilapidated Section of the Cluett-Peabody Bleachery

At one point in time, there was talk about tearing this old factory down since it was in bad shape. A grant, however, kept the factory from being torn down and turned Peebles Island into a historic site. Only a small section of the Cluett-Peabody Factory is habitable at present. Renovated offices for historical staff are located off to the right.

WTF?!

Breastworks? OK, I looked it up. Here's the definition: A temporary, quickly constructed fortification, usually breast-high. I suspect that the -- a prior name for Peebles Island -- are the breastworks being referred to on the historical marker.

The path into the park

I'm honestly not sure if the old bleachery is technically part of the state park, or not; but the main part is down this path and behind it. It felt interestingly like a corridor - wall of trees on one side, barbed wire fence on the other.

Old Bleachery

The old bleachery, at Peebles Island State Park. I think this may be my favorite one off of today's walk. Something about the old, rusty towers with the American Flag and the security SUV is interesting to me.

Historic Marker

They're just lumps on the ground - you can actually see them in the other historic marker sign. Still, it's interesting. This refers, by the way, to John Burgoyne, a British General.

Little shack

On the back corner of the bleachery site/office park, there's this little beat-to-crap shack with a DANGER: No tresspassing sign on the doors. No clue what it's supposed to be.

The source of the town's name, and the fort that used to be here. I find it interesting that the fort was this far up-river. I

The northern bridge off of Peebles Island. One-lane, just like the southern bridge - I thought it was an interesting shot.

One of the old bleachery buildings. Would you believe this site is now something like the offices for NYS Preservation?

The informational sign from the old bleachery site. Can't read the small text, but hey, who can?
