Hong Kong Skyscrapers

Hong Kong Skyscrapers

Somehow I had never heard of these buildings, which are some of the tallest in the world. Here is the list from architecture.about.com/library/bltall.htm: 1. Burj Khalifa, Dubai 2. Taipei 101, Taiwan 3. Shanghai World Financial Center, China 4. International Commerce Centre (ICC), Hong Kong 5. Petronas Towers, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia 6. Willis Tower (formerly Sears Tower), Chicago 7. Jin Mao Building, Shanghai, China 8. Two International Finance Centre (IFC), Hong Kong 9. CITIC Plaza, Guangzhou, China 10. Shun Hing Square, Shenzhen, China 11. Empire State Building, New York 12. Central Plaza, Hong Kong 13. Bank of China, Hong Kong 18. The Center, Hong Kong It's kind of amazing to be on the top of Victoria Peak, look across the harbor, and see the top of the ICC at the same elevation. Apparently, it was first planned to be much higher, but they were not allowed to build it higher than the surrounding peaks. BTW, Hong Kong also has the most skyscrapers in the world - more than twice as many as second place New York City, according to www.emporis.com/application/?nav=mostskyscrapers&lng=3.

My fogged out vacation !

This shot will look so lame coming after the previous one ... no tripod, on a cold night, with hundreds of people jostling around me for a spot to shoot, so pardon the lack of technical competency on display in this shot ! I spent about a week in Hong Kong in early April, a holiday I planned for about a year ago. It was great fun, and I enjoyed myself, but from a photog's point of view, it was all fogged out !! The first few days, the fog was bad, affecting visibility of most of the skyline, which is an attraction in itself. We had a hotel room with a view of the harbour and the HK Island skyline, but sometimes, you will struggle to even make out the buildings just less than 1km across the harbour ! Here's a shot from Victoria Peak - or The Peak - of the only view that matters - down ! 15 minutes after this shot was taken, fog rolled in and blanketed the entire area !!

Saturday's wetaher had been forcasted to be 50% rain. It turned out not to be true, so I seized the opportunity and took a taxi up to Victoria Peak. The view from here is absolutely amazing! I had arrived about an hour before sunset, which was just enough time to still secure a good vantage spot. Now unlike the observation points in NYC, the Peak Tower does not restrict the use of tripods. When I arrived at the top of the Tower, the were already six photogs setup with their tripods. In speaking with some locals the next day, they said the sky this weekend had been the clearest they've seen in a long time. Come to find out, I think part of that reason was because a typhoon was spinning somewhere offshore.

View Large On White Hong Kong, taken from The Peak. I've got back from a 5 night holiday to Hong Kong. This was one of the must take photo's from the trip. I got to the viewing platform at the top of the peak above Hong Kong and found my tripod was too short to get a view over ther glass sides. This was taken with the camera tripod balanced on top of the railings so the aperature had to be wide to keep the exposure time down. This version will probably get changed after I've had some sleep and I've reprocessed it. No HDR processed from a single raw in CS3

For those who love doing night photography, Hong Kong nightscape is really spectacular, especially from Victoria Peak. I use the prime 50mm f/1.8 for this shot. It surprisingly renders better color quality and better overall image quality than my 'other' lens in the bag.. One tip for those who plan to go there: It can be much colder and windier at the Peak compare to the city below. So dress wisely if you plan to stay outside taking pictures. View Large

Had Saturday off to stroll around town to get to know it better (thinking of moving to HK by year end). Weather was great (by HK standards of course) so went up to The Peak to take in the views. Hong Kong SAR, China *Back in Tokyo today, but off to New Zealand tomorrow for Spring vacation with the family! Will be off the grid for most the time, so won't be able to checkout everyone's great photostreams as often as I'd like. Back home in Tokyo week after next.

The typical, postcard perfect, night time view from Victoria Peak, Hong Kong. Thankfully we were blessed with a lovely clear night, and it was still tshirt and shorts weather due to the high 20s temperature combined with the 80~90% humidty. Stitched Panorama from 3 shots. This is a digital proof of what will be a stitched film shot taken on a Mamiya C3 TLR onto Fuji Fortia Film. As soon as I get that one scanned and stitched i'll post it up here.

Taken during my last night in Hong Kong. After living here for around ten years I am leaving and not planning on coming back any time soon, or even ever again. A bit nostalgic. The photo itself did not turn out the way I was hoping, but it's good enough. I was using long exposures with a tripod where one of the legs wasn't working properly, and people walking by was making the tripod shake.

Ever since I saw a picture of it the first time I had been longing to take a photo of the spectacular Hong Kong skyline from Victoria Peak. It is definitely one of the most futuristic night vistas in the world. Shot with Olympus E-620, 14-54 mm and a Gorillapod with El Cheapo ballhead purchased in the city on the picture.

This wok-shaped building is The Peak Tower - a spectacular lookout high above Hong Kong. Definitely one of the best places to view Kowloon, central Hong Kong and the Hong Kong harbour. If you'd rather ride to the Peak then there's a tramway which you can pick up at their Garden Road station (it's quite a ride).

I found this previously taken picture from my trip to HK in 2008. I set up from top of Victoria Peak. There is a huge shopping mall with a nice upper viewing terrace. The view from that spot is really amazing, especially in the night with clear sky. Hong Kong, China

I placed my camera on a telescope-thing (I have no tripod), left the shutter open for two seconds and made use of the professional flash light of the Canon photographer in front of me (didn't use my own flash).
