Patras
Interesting places in Patras:Patras (Demotic Greek Pa'tra, Classical Greek Pa'trai Ptrai, Latin Patrae, Ottoman Turkish Ballibadra) is the third-largest city of Greece and the capital of the prefecture of Achaea, located in northern Peloponnese, 215 kilometers to the west of Athens. The city is built at the foothills of Mount Panachaikon, overlooking the Gulf of Patras.
Notable sights include:
- The impressive Rio-Antirio bridge.
- The Roman Odeon.
- The Achaia Clauss wine factory.
- St. Andrews Church: Inside this church, which was built in the 20th century, are preserved the remains of St. Andrew the Apostle. These are located in a small chapel to the back right of the church as you face the front. The remains of his X-shaped cross are kept behind it.
- The Castro, which offers a good view of the city.
- The Faro (Lighthouse) which is the symbol of the city.
- The Apolllo Theatre, situated at the central square of King George A.
- The Turkish hot baths (Hammam) which are still in use.
- some very attractive leafy squares with terrace cafes.

Rio-Antirio Bridge

The Rio-Antirio bridge, officially called Charilaos Trikoupis bridge after the statesman who first envisioned it, is a cable-stayed bridge crossing the Gulf of Corinth near Patras, linking the town of Rio on the Peloponnese to Antirio on mainland Greece, thus connecting the peninsula with the rest of Europe. When crossing the Rio-Antirio bridge connecting the Greek mainland with the Pelopponese we had to stop in the middle of the bridge. They were repairing a cable that was striken by lighnting. Unfortunately I only managed to make two pictures before the road was cleared!
