Scala Cinema Staircase | Siam Square | Bangkok

Scala Cinema Staircase | Siam Square | Bangkok
Made by I Prahin | www.southeastasia-images.com
Explore, Sep 8, 2009 #155 Built in 1967, with around 900 seats, the Scala is Bangkok's oldest single-screen movie theater. Being an ‘old-school’ kind of person, I also love watching my movies here. Ticket prices are a steal at only THB100 (about US$3). The Scala, one of Bangkok’s few remaining 60s-era movie palaces that hasn’t been torn down or turned into a transvestite cabaret, sits on a narrow alley leading off the hyper-congested Rama I Road at Siam Square. Nothing is new at the Scala, with the slighly stuffy and dim foyer and the staff wearing uniforms of an old epoch. When you enter the theater from busy Siam Square, two lonely old ticket booths with no computers welcome you. Walking up the wide stairs of the Scala is kind of being part in a Fellini movie. You enter a unique combination of memory, dreams, fantasy, the weird - and quiet desires. Beside a handful of older buildings left standing in Bangkok the 40 year old Scala is one of the last witnesses of a past era. The classic reception hall welcomes with a marble floor. As the floor, almost all of the fittings were imported from Italy - the country which gave Bangkok a lot of great architecture and magnificent landmarks - such as Hua Lampong Railway Station, Neilson Hays Library or Government House. Bangkok is literally littered with palaces designed and built by classic Italian architects. I think you would agree that the architecture here is quite unique (particularly for Thailand)!! This capture is for mennomenno who wanted to see the interior! Visit my website: Southeast Asia Images Link to Thailand’s premier image gallery:

Yum! Yum! Happy Monday!

Yum! Yum! Happy Monday!
Made by Zolashine
Good morning, everyone! Today is Monday…for some of us, it is a day when we start working again. Weekdays are like a road that we have to walk through. For some of us, the pace might be faster and we have to run in order to keep up the speed. Some of us fell and left behind. For those of us who's hurt and injured, don't forget that we can take a break. Stop and rest for a while then move on. There is no point on moving on when you are hurt. You will hurt yourself even more. When you stop and starts observing the world around you, then you will realize how beautiful it is. And that's what happened to me. I saw this girl on the street. The way she plays and acts is so innocent and cute like a sunshine on my rainy day. Looking at her makes me smile. So I want to share this image with all of you. I hope you can look at her and smile. She is also walking on the road like us too…..but she takes each step slower and observing the world carefully. She sees what we can't see through her innocent lens. Maybe she see things not through her eyes, but through her heart Maybe we should use our heart instead of our eyes to see….I'm sure it will be more beautiful It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye. - Le Petit Prince Have a great Monday!

Bangkok Cosplay #7 | Golfing Angel

Bangkok Cosplay #7 | Golfing Angel
Made by I Prahin | www.southeastasia-images.com
Cosplay (コスプレ, kosupure), short for costume roleplay, is a type of performance art whose participants outfit themselves, with often-elaborate costumes and accessories, as a specific character or idea. Characters are usually sourced in various Japan, South Korea, China, and Philippines media, including manga, anime, tokusatsu, comic books, graphic novels, video games, hentai and fantasy movies. Other sources include performers from J-pop, J-rock, visual kei, fantasy music stories (such as stories by the band Sound Horizon), novels, and objects from cyberspace or the real world that are unique and dramatic (especially if they have or can be given an anthropomorphic form). Cosplay participants (cosplayers) form a subculture centered around wearing their costumes and reenacting scenes or inventing likely behavior inspired by their chosen sources. In some circles, the term cosplay has been broadened to include simply wearing a costume, without special consideration given to enacting characters in a performance context. Truth Today - Red Shirts supporter, Bangkok.

Truth Today - Red Shirts supporter, Bangkok.
Made by ndnbrunei
Protected by an impressive array of Buddhist amulets and holding the National United Front of Democracy Against Dictatorship flag, this man was supporting a Red Shirts rally in the up market shopping district of Bangkok. This rally was some distance from the protest that led to the deaths of 20 people (April 10, 2010). We were on the end of our trip and found ourselves in the middle of the political demonstration - roads blocked, shops closed etc. Luckily where we were, although completely surrounded by red shirts, was not dangerous. Totally unaware of the very serious nature of the protests elsewhere, the enthusiastic expression of democracy was quite exciting. People were warm and friendly and were enjoying the chance to exercise freedom of speech. We were shocked when we heard about the demonstration at the Democracy Monument a few kilometres away. . . stopped play. A familiar term to followers in Britain of cricket. Except this was the scene at Rajaprasong intersection in Bangkok, the main rally site of the Redshirt protesters. There were tens of thousands here 12 hours earlier, and this morning there would have been fewer than a thousand. One of the many protesting monks walked by as I snapped this (deliberately, shutter on high speed continuous). I don't see how monks, if they are truly Buddhist, can be political . . but that's just me.

This sight greeted me on my way to work this morning. Tyre barricades burning in two locations throw black acrid smoke into the air. The military began its crackdown. 7 of the 9 core leaders of the UDD have surrendered as I write this, 2pm. But . . is this the end? Or the beginning of something much worse? Already buildings are set on fire in several different places of the city.

...and this is for you, Hana :)) In Bangkok fashion seems even more important among young people than in Europe. These photos have been taken around Siam Square, location of a number of huge and fancy shopping malls. The background shows water running down the outer wall of one of them. Fashionable architecture, too...
