Cubist Tour Eiffel

Cubist Tour Eiffel

Visiting Paris and being trained as a Fine Artist one is aware of the huge influence on the world of art that Paris has had on Art of the Western World. With the birth of Impressionism in 1874 and the following isms, art hold a huge dept to this cities creative out pouring. But for me it was Cubism, the highly influential visual arts style of the 20th century that was created principally by the painters Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque in Paris between 1907 and 1914 that I have a huge admiration for. The Cubist style emphasized the flat, two-dimensional surface of the picture plane, rejecting the traditional techniques of perspective, foreshortening, modeling, and chiaroscuro and refuting time-honoured theories of art as the imitation of nature. Cubist painters were not bound to copying form, texture, colour, and space; instead, they presented a new reality in paintings that depicted radically fragmented objects, whose several sides were seen simultaneously. It was with cubism in mind that I decided to do put this frame together, overlapping 4 frames with differing degrees of framing. Now I am not saying this is new, Hockney used photography to create joiners etc, but with the aid of photoshop the degree of layering could be adjusted with a few masks and curve adjustments so adds a more traditional feel. Arc de Triumphe, Paris, France at evening. Please zoom in and see the amazingly details Arc de Triumph Gigapixelized How it was made: The image was constructed with about 209 zoomed-in photographs with overlapping portions . To prevent differences in shade, colour and focusing, the shutter speed, aperture, focus, ISO and White balance were kept fixed in manual mode. A gigapan sticher was used to combine the photos. Their site shows photos in flash, so easily zoomable. Arc de Triumph is one of the defining monuments of Paris, France. It honours the soldiers who fought for France, including 660 names of all the generals and wars faught. The floor of the moument contains the tomb of the unknown soldier from World War I. On a funny note, coming from a North American winter, I waited for the evening blue colours from 6:15 pm . Little did I know that I would have to wait till 9 pm, till both the sky is slightly dark and the lights on the monument start. Getting suspicious of my constant staring at Arc de Triumph, the cops dropped by to ask about my intentions (and for searching my bags).

This original version of this shot (copy below in the comments) of the Eiffel Tower somehow reminded me of Blackpool so I tried a couple of different post-production treatments to give the shot a bit of oomph. Any thoughts ? From Wikipedia : The Eiffel Tower (French: La Tour Eiffel, nickname La dame de fer, the iron lady) is an 1889 iron lattice tower located on the Champ de Mars in Paris that has become both a global icon of France and one of the most recognizable structures in the world. The tallest building in Paris, it is the most-visited paid monument in the world; millions of people ascend it every year. Named for its designer, engineer Gustave Eiffel, the tower was built as the entrance arch to the 1889 World's Fair. The tower stands 324 metres (1,063 ft) tall, about the same height as an 81-storey building. Upon its completion, it surpassed the Washington Monument to assume the title of tallest man-made structure in the world, a title it held for 41 years, until the Chrysler Building in New York City was built in 1930. Not including broadcast antennas, it is the second-tallest structure in France after the 2004 Millau Viaduct.

Le voyage dans la lune!

Le voyage dans la lune!

This telescope reminded me of the science fiction writer Jules Verne. One little known book was Paris in the Twentieth Century (Paris au XXe siècle). The book presents Paris in 1960, about 100 years in Verne's future, where society has value only for business and technology. In the book, Verne predicted many things he thought would occur in the 1960s. Some came true, but some were so prescient that by the 1960s, people had not yet reached the standard. Among them are: ▪Mutually assured destruction. ▪skyscrapers ▪gasoline-powered automobiles ▪high-speed trains ▪calculators ▪The Internet (a worldwide telegraphic communications network) ▪electric chairs (criminals executed by electric charge) ▪Computers Very interesting! After my last three uploads bombing in terms of comments, It will be interesting how this view from on top the Arc de Triomphe is received! As a point of interest do look at this 1902 movie A Trip to the Moon / Le Voyage dans la lune - 1902 inspired by Jules Verne and HG Wells.

Arc de Triomphe, Paris Most things in life are moments of pleasure and a lifetime of embarrassment; photography is a moment of embarrassment and a lifetime of pleasure. - Tony Benn It was quite an experience trying to capture this shot. I stood on a small island in the middle of the huge road where cars were zooming past me quickly on both sides. I had to be careful not to move my tripod too much just in case a car went too close and hit it! When the traffic lights turned red, I looked around and realised that I was getting funny stares from both the pedestrians crossing the road and the drivers who had stopped their cars. (Well, one driver did smile and give me the thumbs-up! LOL) Oh yes! I would like to thank both and Nicole for their super splendid testimonials! Explore #43, July 25, 2009

I took some looking down the spiral exit stair from the Arc de Triomphe but they didn't quite work, the shutter speeds being just too low. This was taken looking up just as you exit where there's handily a little flat roofed booth with a very surprised looking guy sitting in it to stop people entering that way (the surprise may have been a result of me placing my camera on his roof to take the shot). For those interested I've been featured of the fotofame blog, fotofame.blogspot.com/2010/12/beetham-tower-close-up-by-d... , yesterday talking about one of my Manchester photos (and trying very hard not to sound too pretentious).

4898 x 4637 The monument stands 49.5 m (162 ft) in height, 45 m (150 ft) wide and 22 m (72 ft) deep. The large vault is 29.19 m (95.8 ft) high and 14.62 m (48.0 ft) wide. The small vault is 18.68 m (61.3 ft) high and 8.44 m (27.7 ft) wide. It is the second largest triumphal arch in existence. Its design was inspired by the Roman Arch of Titus. The Arc de Triomphe is so colossal that three weeks after the Paris victory parade in 1919, marking the end of hostilities in World War I, Charles Godefroy flew his Nieuport biplane through it, with the event captured on newsreel. Today has been one of those Sundays where there's nothing going on it's cold out so we're all quite happy sat around doing as little as possible. This shot is a good example of what happens when I've got too much time on my hands. I've cropped to a 2:1 panoramic ratio, converted to mono (with an infra-red preset to enhance the trees / sky), applied a bit of difusion, a Topaz Adjust filter, a subtle blue tint ad finally a fake Tile / Shift effect in Photoshop. Oh, and a frame. Who says travel photography can't be a little bit arty ? Crazy thing is I've actually got about a million other things I could (and probably should) be doing.

Went especially back de the Arc to take a night shot of it, since I wanted it pritty badly! Never seen such a busy street while it was already eleven o'clock in the evening, hearing the sounds of horns from angry car drivers because there are no marks on the road which was for me quite weird. However, this shot was taken while I was staning on the road, so I guess also a lot of 'horns' were meant for me but that did not scared my off to take the shot. Like the result, hope you like it too. Much, Much, Much Better On Large

At Place Charles-de-Gaulle at the western end of the Champs Elysees, traffic whizzes around the Arc de Triomphe. It was close to 2:00 a.m. on a Saturday night, and I was drunk, having just emerged from a Parisian karaoke bar a few blocks off the Champs Elysees (a couple of hours earlier, I had made my French karaoke singing debut). But naturally I had my camera and tripod with me. :) And when I walked down that broad avenue and saw that the arch was still illuminated, I knew what I had to do. The Arc de Triomphe again, in Paris. This was a challenge because of the huge, moving shadows... I corrected some of them, but still, I'm not entirely happy. Moreover, the pattern on the ground is really a nightmare if you're shooting handheld... and I didn't manage to correct the twisted horizon in Hugin... but anyway. :) Have a try at the the-Arc-as-if-you-were-there immersive experience. Part of my set.

Or is it a stairway to heaven and did I make it to the top? :) I took this shot inside the famous Arc de Triomphe. It was really hard to get a photo like this, I couldn't use my tripod (of course, duh it's Paris) and it was pretty dark in here.. Now I look back at the EXIF I'm pretty proud of myself I got a sharp photo with an exposure of 1.5 seconds :) I guess I made it to the top, Explore number fucking one! Sorry I said fucking people! Sorry I did it again :) Yeah first time number one is nice :)

Have you ever, ever felt like this? Have strange things happened, Are you going round the twist? - Round the twist (Kids TV show...for those who remember) We went up the Arc de Triomphe with about as many tourists as the place can handle. I decided to go all Strobist on them but regardless of the fact that I was hand-holding my gear over the edge, people still thought nothing of bumping into me :o) Strobist: Cam right: SB900 @ 1/64 aimed at wall. I've been to 10 or so countries this year - and all of them make US traffic look tame. France was not one of the more exotic countries by any means, but the traffic there did not dissapoint. Nearly missed my flight despite leaving 3.5 hours early. But the gigantic circle around the Arc de Triomphe was mind boggling. How does something like this happen??? Clearly the smart ones veer to the right... ----- That famous Fatt Matt's 216/365

This past winter, I climbed to the top of the Arc de Triomphe just as clouds filled the Paris sky causing day to quickly become night. The combination of clouds and dusk created a really amazing grey over the city. The combination of the backdrop and the lighting of the Eiffel Tower make this picture. There is also something amazing about how the Eiffel Tower appears to be basically sitting atop the city around it.

And on to Paris. Of all the places that had a view that I saw, the Arc de Triomphe was my favorite. I'll post one of the views later, but beyond the view the stairs are fantastic. I worth the climb, and not nearly as tiring as the staircase was. I may post another much different take on this shot later, but this was my favorite. -----
