Parthenon
The Parthenon (ancient Greek: Parthenw%n) is a temple of Athena, built in the 5th century BC on the acropolis of Athens. It is the most famous surviving building of ancient Greece, and has been praised as the finest achievement of Greek architecture. Its decorative sculptures are considered one of the high points of Greek art. The Parthenon is an enduring symbol of ancient Greece and of Athenian democracy, and is regarded as one of the world's greatest cultural monuments.Top photos chosen by u all:

West end of Parthenon. The building was undergoing extensive reconstruction when I visited. Much of the inner walls and some of the outer metopes were missing, being repaired. Smog, vibrations from airplanes and foot traffic, souvenir hunting and the oils from people's hands and especially sunscreen (!) all have taken their toll on the building in recent decades, and one is no longer allowed past the bottom of the steps. She's a grand old lady. Odd getting to finally see her, after reading about this place and teaching a few art history classes featuring slides like this. (But now I have my own!)
