La Puerta de Alcalá is one of the most famous monuments in Madrid. The king Carlos III (Charles III) ordered its construction in 1774 and was designed by Francesco Sabatini. It is located in Plaza de la Independecia (Independence Square), near the city center, and in front of the main entrance to the Jardines del Buen Retiro (One of the biggest parks in Madrid). It is called Puerta de Alcalá (Alcalá Gate) because it's placed on the way between Madrid and Alacalá de Henares. It was built in neo-classical style, with Ionic chapiters on the columns. This monument consists in three semicircular arches and two rectangular arches in both sides. The incription in both east and west facades says: Rege Carolo III. Anno MDCCLXXVIII (King Charles III, Year 1778). Over it there's a coat of arms held by the Fame and the Genius. I just found this shot of Madrid's Crystal Palace amongst my oldies. I played a couple in the past, but not from this angle. * * * Located in the Retiro Park in Madrid, the Crystal Palace, also known as the Chocolate Box, was designed by Ricardo Velázquez in 1887 for use as a hothouse during an exhibition on Spain's colonies. Once the exhibition was over it became the site of the Overseas Museum. Surrounded by a lake, it has a metal structure clothed in glass, and its design became an architectural model for similar projects in several European cities due to its curved panes with their silicone frames which cushioned dilation and ensured water tightness. This building, after undergoing various stages of neglect, is currently the property of the Ministry of Culture and has been allocated for use as a venue for temporary modern art exhibitions from the Reina Sofía National Art Centre.

It stands near the city center and several meters away from the main entrance to the Parque del Buen Retiro (Wikipedia). HDR from 7 bracketed exposures (1EV steps) on a tripod. -------------------- La Puerta de Alcalá es uno de los monumentos más significativos de Madrid (España) junto con la cercana fuente de Cibeles. Fue mandada construir por el rey Carlos III y es obra del arquitecto Francesco Sabatini. Se halla en la Plaza de la Independencia, en el cruce de las calles de Alcalá, Alfonso XII, Serrano y Salustiano Olózaga y junto a la Puerta de España, entrada principal a los jardines del Retiro (Wikipedia). HDR generado de un horquillado de 7 exposiciones (intervalos de 1EV) con un trípode. ;-)

El Palacio de Cristal del Retiro es una estructura de metal y cristal situado en los Jardines del Retiro de Madrid (España). Fue levantado en 1887 con motivo de la Exposición de las Islas Filipinas, celebrada ese mismo año. Su estructura es de metal, y está totalmente recubierto por planchas de cristal, de ahí su nombre. Fue construido por Ricardo Velázquez Bosco, y su proyecto de construcción se inspiraba en el Crystal Palace, de Paxton. La decoración cerámica utilizada en pequeños frisos y remates es obra de Daniel Zuloaga; de ella destacan las figuras de grutescos con cabezas de ánades.1 La gran impresión que debió de causar el palacio queda reflejada en esta descripción, aparecida en El Globo, en 1887.

The Parque del Buen Retiro named by Madrid's king is a large and popular, 1.4 km² (350 acres) park in Madrid city center, not far from the Prado Museum. And just at the heart of the Park you will find Palacio de Cristal (Crystal Palace). Palacio de Cristal is a very lovely building made of metal and glass, built in 1887 as a winter garden for exotic plants.
