Millions of tears

Millions of tears

This monument was erected in memory of the Dutch civilian casualties of World War II. The text on the pedestal reads: Rock of Millions of Tears. In Rotterdam it also marks a place of historical significance. It stands on the eastern borderline of the enormous destruction caused on the 14th of May 1940 by bombs of the German Luftwaffe and the subsequent fire storm. It was placed on this spot in May 1990 on the 50th anniversary of this tragedy. The monument was made by Truus Menger-Oversteegen. She was a very young resistance fighter during the German occupation in Haarlem. The sign near the monument, very mistakenly, says she was an Amsterdam resistance fighter. I know it is wrong because I met Truus. Besides: I am currently writing stories about the history of Haarlem during the occupation. I will try to get it corrected.

The pheasant was in the park. I cicled by and he shinned to me. There were 3 velocities: the pheasant´s, the bycicle and the car traffic next to me. The pheasant was the winner: His colours were quickly gone.
