Paris is the capital city of France. It is situated on the River Seine, in northern France, at the heart of the Île-de-France region ("Paris Region"). The population of Paris is 2,144,700 ^ and is the country's most populated municipality. Paris is at the centre of an urban area with a population of 9.93 million.^ The Paris "aire urbaine" (roughly: "metropolitan area") encompassing the Paris urban area and commuter belt has a population of 11.5 million^ and is one of the most populated of its kind in Europe.^

One of the best value and most convenient ways to see the sights of Paris is with the (previously known as ), a pre-paid entry card that allows entry into over 70 museums and monuments around Paris and comes in 2-day (€30), 4-day (€45) and 6-day (€60) denominations (prices as of March 2007). The card allows you to jump otherwise sometimes lengthy queues and is available from participating museums, tourist offices, Fnac branches and all the main Métro and RER train stations. You will still need to pay to enter most special exhibitions.

Note that most museums and galleries are closed on either Monday or Tuesday - check ahead to avoid disappointment! - and most ticket counters close 30 - 45 minutes before final closing.

Also consider the also a pre paid entry card + queue jumping to 60 attractions including The Louvre, The Arc de Triomphe, as well as a river cruise, open top bus tour, cycle hire and allows free metro & public transport travel.

All national museums are open free of charge on the first Sunday of the month; note, however, that this may mean long lines and crowded exhibits. Keep away from Paris during Easter week. It's really crowded. People have to queue up at the Eiffel tower for several hours.

These listings are just some highlights of things that you really should see if you can during your visit to Paris. The complete listings are found on each individual district page (follow the link in parenthesis).

A good listing of almost everything to do in Paris are the 'Pariscope', the 'Officiel des spectacles', and the much hipper 'Zurban' , weekly magazines listing all concerts, stage plays and museums. Available from many kiosks. Unfortunately their is of no use at all. If you prefer a web version, you can visit , with maps of Paris, audio tours to download freely and more than 2000 visit and entertainment points.

Landmarks

Notre Dame de Paris
  • the Eiffel Tower . One of the most famous landmarks in the world.
  • Père-Lachaise Cemetery . See the grave of Jim Morrison amongst many others.
  • Catacombs . Used to store the exhumed bones from the overflowing Paris cemetery.
  • Arc de Triomphe . The grave of the unknown soldier is under the arch.
  • Notre Dame Cathedral . Impressive Gothic cathedral that was the inspiration for Victor Hugo's novel . Saved in the 19th century by the best-known french architect Viollet-le-Duc.
Sacré Coeur
  • Sacré Coeur . A church perched on top of the highest point in Paris. Behind the church is the artists' area, in front are spectacular views of the whole city.
  • Sainte Chapelle . Far more beautiful than the famous, but gloomy, Notre Dame. Make sure you go an a sunny day, as the highlight of this small chapel in Rayonnante Gothic style are the large stained-glass windows which soar up to near the vaulted ceiling. Also of interest is the extremely ornate lower level. If it happens to be rainy or cloudy, give Sainte Chappelle a miss, as the play of colored lights on the floor are well worth the wait for a sunnier day.
  • Pantheon . Underneath, the final resting place for the great heroes of the French Republic; above, a marvellous view of the city.
  • Chateau de Versailles . On the outskirts of the city, the "must see" home of the Sun King Louis XIV.
  • Grand Arche de la Defense . A modern office-building variant of the Arc de Triomphe. Has a viewing platform.

Museums and galleries

  • The Louvre . One of the finest museums in the world of art, art-history, and culture
  • Musée d'Orsay . Home to the great artists of the 19th century (1848-1914) - Impressionists, post-Impressionists, and the rest...
  • Centre Georges Pompidou . the great museum of modern art, the building an attraction in itself...
  • Jacquemart-Andre Museum . Private collection of French, Italian, Dutch masterpieces in a typical XIXth century mansion...
  • Picasso Museum . Contains the master's own collections.
  • Rodin Museum . His personal collection and archives, in a charming hotel and sprawling garden.
  • Delacroix. National museum housed in the home of painter Eugene Delacroix.
  • Invalides . Museum of arms and armor from the Middle Ages to today.
  • Carnavalet . Museum of Paris history; exhibitions are permanent and free. Noted for its collection of French Revolution artifacts, such as David's famous painting Has Proust's bed and the dauphin's room in the prison tower diarama. Located in the Marais.
  • Cluny . Paris's medieval museum, housed in a part roman, part medieval building.
  • Le Musée de l'AP-HP . Paris's medical history.
  • Le Musee des Arts Decoratifs . Showcasing eight centuries of French savoir faire.

Atomic Mushroom - Parisian Fire Breather

Atomic Mushroom - Parisian Fire Breather
Made by DiGitALGoLD
Atomic Mushroom - Parisian Fire Breather I really have to start a new set that's called Paris You Are Missed! Everyone knows that Paris is one of the most magical cities in the world but what I love is how the people there absolutely love their art. On a normal worktime lunch break, the average group of American men would discuss sports at least 65% of the time. I like sports and I'm not against that; however, I value my worktime lunches I had in Paris that were filled with discussions of photography. We'd talk about different photography styles, post processing, and I was frequently asked about the father of American photographers, Ansel Adams. Several Parisian Flickrites meet to watch and take photographs of local fire breathers every Saturday. I was fortunate enough to be invited and I absolutely loved it. One tip I can offer about shooting fire is that people tend to over expose (especially with a lot of ambient light). Set your camera to Manual mode and crank up the shutter speed. As you can see below, this shot was taken at 1/1250 of second. Camera Data from this shot: Camera: Nikon D3 Lens: Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 F Stop: f/5.6 Shutter: 1/1250 of a second ISO: 200

Follow me on twitter: twitter.com/#!/ritacranephoto [Four photos at this post, Flickr friends! Scroll down for the other three.] I couldn't believe my eyes when I emerged from the dimly lit interior of Notre Dame --- after enjoying the soprano singing vespers --- and walked into the soft rain showers of the evening. What a wonderful surprise to be greeted by this illuminated sky full of rich color! The shining pavement reflecting a glorious sunset shone against the dark buildings, and people with their umbrellas were in silhouette, framed by the illuminated lamposts. Paris between day and night! It was one of those moments when you just grab your camera and do your best to capture the magic! . Quelle belle surprise inattendue! THANKS SO MUCH FOR STOPPING BY FLICKR FRIENDS.

HDR from 3 RAW shots and colors filters effects. That's rare in my pics, but I did not change the sky this time, but I cleaned the pic in deleting from the image all the people walking and those sitting on the wooden border you can see on the forground :-)) I am fully back :-) Unfortunately, a great friend of mine was not able to come to Paris as scheduled.. Don't worry Michel, bottles are on standby for next time, and hope very soon! :-)) Concerning the events of the last days here regarding censure, I still feel sad for concerned people and saw that some members deleting themselves accounts..... I regulary read the topic about this matter, but the more I read, the less I understand (why discussions are not in russian?? :-)). I just wait the official conclusions, with the hope that people are intelligent enough to take the right decisions and preserve our great communauty, and I will decide myself what to do accordingly.... But before that, I will try to do what I am for here first : photos.... Have a great week-end dear friends :-) (better)

Centre Pompidou

Centre Pompidou

And I'm back again. Only 4 days, but it seemed like weeks.. I've seen a lot of things, although I saw most of those places when I was there 2 years ago, but still, I saw a lot :) I made this photo on the top of Centre Pompidou, a very cool building. I did a long exposure, because there were walking a lot of people around here and I didn't want them on my photo ;) But what's up with all the stupid reasons you can't use tripods in Paris? I really got some weird excuses like: 'Only professional photographers can use tripods here' or 'We don't know why you can't use it, but there is a sign out there you can't use a tripod and flash'. (While all those tourist with there crappy p&s camera's were flashing all the time and the security didn't say anything about that) But anyway I was rebelic all the time and still used my tripod most of the time :) Explore #2, for a really short time, but anyway thanks :)

Aodai - Vietnamese national costume

Aodai - Vietnamese national costume
Made by DulichVietnam360°
Explore #78, May 30, 2009. Model: Vi Location: Castle of Vincennes From Wikipedia: The ao dai (áo dài) is a Vietnamese national costume primarily for women. In its current form, it is a tight-fitting silk dress worn over pantaloons. In modern Vietnamese, áo refers to an item of clothing that covers from the neck down. Dài means long. The ao dai is now standard for weddings, for celebrating Tết and for other formal occasions. The most popular style of ao dai fits tightly around the wearer's upper torso, emphasizing her bust and curves. Although the dress covers the entire body, it is thought to be provocative, especially when it is made of thin fabric. The ao dai covers everything, but hides nothing, according to one saying. Breacher Light Assault Cruiser

Breacher Light Assault Cruiser

One of the most recent warships available on market, built by Phoenix Assembly Yards. Its built for combat and speed and excells at it. It features 10 Med Pulsar cannons and a pair of Dual Ultra Heavy Railgun turrets. A small dock bay for a pair of scouts and a few shuttles. The sensor array is good but electronics in general are the ship's weakness. However, a pair of oversized Rolls Royce 'Thunder' Nitrogen-Plasma engines gives this ship incredible sublight speeds. I'm particularly happy about this build as it makes use of modulex bricks for which i found unusual and very unexpected connections (between the fireman breathing mask and the goggles for example) Viewing original size is recommended if you wanna see details

Eiffel Tower - Paris

Here is a shot of the Eiffel Tower from the fountains in front of Place du Trocadero - Paris, France. For those of you that have visited Paris pre-2000, the Eiffel Tower played host to Paris' Millennium Celebration. On this occasion, flashing lights and four high-power searchlights were installed on the tower. Since then, the light show has become a nightly event. The searchlights on top of the tower make it a beacon in Paris' night sky, and the 20,000 flash bulbs give the tower a sparkly appearance every hour on the hour. Camera: Nikon D3 Lens: Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 F Stop: f/9 9 Exposure HDR ISO: 200 I appreciate your comments and favs! Thanks for looking.

Or is it a stairway to heaven and did I make it to the top? :) I took this shot inside the famous Arc de Triomphe. It was really hard to get a photo like this, I couldn't use my tripod (of course, duh it's Paris) and it was pretty dark in here.. Now I look back at the EXIF I'm pretty proud of myself I got a sharp photo with an exposure of 1.5 seconds :) I guess I made it to the top, Explore number fucking one! Sorry I said fucking people! Sorry I did it again :) Yeah first time number one is nice :)

Eiffel Tower. My advice to people who visit Paris. I know it seems logical to go to the top of the Eiffel tower when you go to Paris, but what is missing in the view? What is the most recognizable object in Paris? On the top of the 210 meters / 689 foot tall Tower Montparnasse skyscraper you can enjoy the best panorama in Paris, France. [#6 ON EXPLORE & FRONTPAGE!] Hesitation to post this picture because, the framing is bad, because the composition is not well-balanced, because of many other details. Tentation because when I took it, I was really happy because I got the ray of the sun as I wanted to get it... Finally, I didn't have enough time today to take any picture, so I upload this one. Maybe you won't like it; but I was happy when I took it... ;) Have a great day everybody ! ;)

Photo: 1.0 sec at f / 2.8, iso 100, 7.4 mm. The tower stands at 324 m (1,063 ft) tall, about the same height as an 81-story building. It was the tallest structure in the world from its completion until 1930, when it was eclipsed by the Chrysler Building in New York City. Eiffel Tower has become both a global icon of France and one of the most recognizable structures in the world. It is the single most visited paid monument in the world. You are invited in...
