Paramaribo (nicknamed Par'bo) is the capital of Suriname, located in the Paramaribo district, with a population of roughly 250,000 people. It lies on the Suriname River, approximately 15 km inland from the Atlantic Ocean. Paramaribo is located at 5°52' North, 55°10' West (5.83° N 55.17° W), and its time zone is UTC-3 except during daylight savings time.

King Vulture @ Paramaribo Zoo The King Vulture, Sarcoramphus papa, is a large bird found in Central and South America. It is a member of the New World vulture family Cathartidae. This vulture lives predominantly in tropical lowland forests stretching from southern Mexico to northern Argentina, though some believe that William Bartram's Painted Vulture of Florida may be of this species. It is the only surviving member of the genus Sarcoramphus, though fossil members are known. It is large and predominantly white, with gray to black ruff, flight, and tail feathers. Its head and neck are bald, with the skin color varying, including yellow, orange, blue, purple, and red. The King Vulture has a very noticeable yellow fleshy caruncle on its beak. This vulture is a scavenger and it often makes the initial cut into a fresh carcass. It also displaces smaller New World vulture species from a carcass. King Vultures have been known to live for up to 30 years in captivity. King Vultures were popular figures in the Mayan codices as well as in local folklore and medicine. Though currently listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, they are decreasing in number, due primarily to habitat loss.

Ruins of Gebouw 1790 Paramaribo Surinam. Part of the fort Zeelandia area. This building was originally built as a barrack and operated as a warehouse for foodstuffs. It was later used as a governmental building and was partly destroyed during a fire in the nineteen eighties.

The Waterkant (waterfront) in Paramaribo is probably the best place to sample Surinamese delicacies. There are numerous stalls selling a range of snacks and meals that reflect the variety of sources from which the cuisine derives - Javanese, Chines, African, Indian etc.

The Surinamese cathedral has been re-opened after 22 years of investigation and restoration. It is one of the largest completely-wooden buildings in South America. In this picture the cathedral is closed for the afternoon siesta.

The 1st of July....Our annual 'Freedom Day'. A day on which we Surinamese remember the day the slavery was abolished in 1863. The costumes the young ladies have on, were worn in the 17th century by the female slaves.

Location: Paramaribo (Anniestraat) White lined tanager (female) Tachyphonus rufus This also a common guest in my garden. It's a very good singer. I haven't found out jet what the local name is of this bird.

On the 31st of December the inner city of Paramaribo, Suriname was completely on fire... works. Some so called pagara fireworks were as long as 700 meters. Not everybody liked it :-)
