Moth or butterfly?

This is the best shot I could manage of this moth/butterfly when I saw it. I believe it was dying. It was clinging to a grass stem and shivering, just rapidly vibrating. I searched with google and came to the conclusion that it might be one of the tiger moth types. The photo is not too great, but is the best one I managed to get. I am loading a shot of a caterpillar I saw a few days later. Co-incidentally, when I tried to look up the caterpillar in a butterfly book; the closest look alike picture I could find was also of one of the tiger moth larvae. If you can help, please see both the photos.

Hoya filter R72, my colors in black and white. Tv mode and set to 4 secs. Tripod of course. This house was at least a half mile away. See More Properties for more information. Serious crop from the bottom, some curves, brightness and contrast adjustment, downsizing and unsharpen mask. I followed Dieter's instructions re warming/cooling filters in Photoshop to change the water to a more blue color. It was very grey. He also provided me with the name of this 'Gadwall duck.
