Der Palazzo della Cancelleria ist Roms schönster Palast aus der Zeit der Frührenaissance. Er wurde Ende des 15. Jh. von einem unbekannten Künstler im Auftrag des Kardinals Raffaele Riario erbaut und von ihm zum Teil aus dem Gewinn eines Würfelspiels (heute entsprechend etwa 500.000. Euro) bezahlt. Für den Travertin wurde das Kolosseum als Steinbruch benutzt. Kardinal Riario konnte sich jedoch nicht lange seines Palastes erfreuen, denn er wurde wenige Jahre nach Fertigstellung von Papst Leo X. konfisziert, da Riario an einer Verschwörung zum Sturz des Papstes beteiligt war. Heute gehört der Palast zum exterritorialen Gebiet des Vatikans und dient als Verwaltungsgebäude (oder Kanzlei, daher der Name Cancelleria) und als Sitz des obersten kirchlichen Gerichtshofs, der Sacra Rota. An der Ecke des Palazzo das Wappen von Julius II. zu sehen und darüber am Kapitell die Riario-Rosen.

The Palace of the Chancellery (Palazzo della Cancelleria) is a palace in Rome, it was constructed between 1489–1513, being the first palazzo in Rome to be built from the ground up in the new Renaissance style. The forty-four Egyptian granite columns of the inner courtyard are from the porticoes of the theatres upper covered seating, however they were originally taken from the theatre to build the old Basilica of S.
