Ruthie and Kate 1967
Made by Vermont Ferret
These photobooth pictures were among the items I inherited from Ruthie. Pictured here are Ruthie and my 16 year old girlfriend Kate in a photobooth at Prestwick Airport in Glasgow, Scotland. Kate probably has the other two pictures from the series somewhere. Kate and I met that summer when she and her brother were attending Corolla-in-England, the summer school for American high school students my dad ran in Reading, near London, England. She was tall -- like Maggie about 5'10 -- really intelligent, frequently hilarious, and often goofy. And not shy in a photobooth. We were crazy about each other and continued to date after we returned to the States (she lived in Baltimore) for another two years. We split up over my growing use of drugs and my depression. She started seeing some shmuck named Jimmer her freshman year at Hollins College. While a junior at Davidson I wrote in 1969 (imaginatively titled Untitled), the lead characters of which are named Jimmer (me) and Sarah (Kate's birth name, changed to Katherine by her dad a few years later). In 1970 it won first prize for short story writing in a competition sponsored by Queens College and subsequently published in their literary magazine. I don't have a copy. I 'spect I could ask Queens to send me a copy and reprint it here alongside a less goofy-looking photo of Kate. [UPDATE: Queens College sent me a copy. I've transcribed it and have posted it here.] We're still very good friends. Ruthie and I drove to Annapolis to rendezvous with Kate about six years ago and had a great time. Kate kept us both in stitches. When Ruthie died this year on May 30, Kate drove down from Maryland to Alexandria to attend the memorial service the next week. It was really good to see her there.

13/1/2011 Another day off sick today. We work with the bradford score, and I had only just got it down to an acceptable level after my dislocation last year!!!! After this week I will no doubt have a crap score again! I decided that I would use this selectively coloured one today to summarise my new outlook. Or at least the outlook I am aiming to live by. There are so many people who are having tough times, and so many of us share it in this wonderful community of HPAD. I am trying to see that no matter how grey things seem to be, there's always a hint of colour somewhere. Sometimes it's obvious, sometimes you need to look for it. sometimes you really need to look, but it's there. Somewhere. My mum is now waiting on her test results. She seems to have convinced herself it's cancer. My gran is going rapidly downhill. theres talk of admitting her to a dementia unit - she is refusing to eat or drink. This is how we eventually lost my aunt, and I wonder if my gran has made a conscious decision...

Winter Glow
Made by DMeadows
A shot I'd taken this afternoon whilst trekking up the hill at Barshaw park in Paisley, Scotland where I spent most of the afternoon snowboarding. The pink tones in the sky against the black trees caught my eye when I'd been going up the hill slightly earlier, and not knowing how quick the light would change I picked up my camera from the car the next time I came down the hill on the board (no falls, so it survived intact folks!) :D See, there is a positive side to this unusual weather we'd experienced in the last few days! (mainly the boarding for me, but also the uniquely winter tones).

Anchor Mill
Made by Bora Horza
This a mono conversion of an HDR shot I had taken last month. The original colour version can be found The textile finishing mill at the Anchor Mills was built in 1886 in the centre of Paisley on the banks of the White Cart River during the thread manufacturing boom which made Paisley famous. It was built for John Clark of the Clark family, who were successful thread manufacturers. In its prime the mill employed hundreds of people, however closed in the 1980s and lay derelict for two decades until it was regenerated into a combination of flats and business offices.

Wolf Moon / Luna del Lupo
Made by Kia & Zeno *away*
{ +1 in comments } This is the combination of two photos take one after the other. The first was a long exposure to capture the colors of the buildings; the second, a short exposure to see the details of the moon. Then we wanted to play a bit, overlapping a closer shot to the moon, creating an unreal but suggestive composition. The Wolf Moon is a full moon that occurs in January. Its name comes from hungry wolf packs that would howl outside the villages of Native Americans. This January’s full moon was also the biggest and brightest of the year.

Paisley Cross
Made by cessna152towser
A classic Western SMT bus revisits Paisley, having arrived at Paisley Cross via the traditional direct route 20 from Glasgow Clyde Street, via Paisley Road West, and prior to leaving via route 8 (Glasgow via Orchard Park - an extension of the old Smiths/SCWS route to South Nitshill which Western took over in 1968). With special thanks to Hugh Cumming and Gary Conn at Glasgow Vintage Vehicle Trust for arranging this photo opportunity with the 1959 Western SMT Leyland PD3 bus which was once a common sight at this location. 10th February, 2008.

St. Mirren won the Cup
Made by cessna152towser
St. Mirren won the Scottish Football Cup in 1926, 1959 and 1987. Here a policeman keeps a watchful eye as the team arrive at Abbey Close, Paisley, on 16th May, 1987, having beaten Dundee United in the final at Hampden by the single goal of the match. The building behind the policeman is the Methodist Hall in Gauze Street. The bus is Clydeside Scottish open top Daimler Fleetine SMS402H, ex Alexander Midland, with Alexander bodywork, Clydeside fleet number R2, Clydeside Scottish Buses being at the time St. Mirren F.C.'s main sponsor.

First snow / Prima neve
Made by Kia & Zeno *away*
Yesterday night a few snowflakes started floating in the air right before midnight, and all of a sudden, right after midnight the snow shower started. In a few minutes everything was covered in white. Today the sun was shining, giving our town a touch of magic {better large} @} ~`~,~ ~ ~ ~ Our first experiment with brushes on a SOOC photo, for the last lesson of Kim Klassen's Skinny-Mini eCourse; bird brushes with thanks to

From the top of the Bell Tower / Dalla cima del Campanile
Made by Kia & Zeno *away*
Once a year, during Doors Open Day, the Bell Tower of Paisley Abbey is open to the public. The view from up there is gorgeous! In this shot you can see the Town Hall as the main subject. In order to arrive on the top of the tower, you have to climb up 200 narrow and badly enlightened steps, but the view repays you for the effort. Thank you all so much for your visits, comments, faves and invites. Very much appreciated!

Taggart
Made by Stuart Chalmers
Was walking into town on Friday afternoon (12th Dec) and found that Taggart was being filmed on Mansionhouse road (fairly) near to where I stay - footage for episode 103 according to the next days Paisley Daily Express. Could Only see John Michie (DI Robbie Ross) and Colin McCredie (Dective Constable Stuart Fraser) on set, but Alex Norton (DCI Matt Burke) was there somewhere too. There's been a mur-dur... apparently.

737-800 Flight Deck with notes
Made by 1-2-3-calum
This is the Flight Deck of a FlyGlobespan Boeing 737-800, . I'll add some notes about the controls, displays and switches when I find the time . I'm not an expert so if anyone has any corrections or things to add please let me know. I used the on camera pop-up flash but diffused it with a piece of paper from the Aircrafts printer which incidently is just out of shot below the First Officers Audio Selector Box.

Before the rain / Prima della pioggia
Made by Kia & Zeno *away*
What a wonderful way to start the day! (September 6th, at 6:40). Although, you know what they say: Red sky at night, sailor's delight. Red sky in the morning, sailors take warning (Rosso di sera, bel tempo si spera. Rosso di mattina, la pioggia si avvicina). Dedicated to all the lovers of SOOC images. This has been only cropped and resized, no editing has been done. Wasn’t the sky simply magical?

9/1/2011 Bit of a wasted day today. Slept in majorly today - after a rather late night doing a photobook for a friend. Kinnon had a birthday party in the afternoon, just stopped quickly to take this shot. I adore this lane - it is stunning in the snow, in the rain, in the sunshine. I plan to take pics in all seasons this year, and put them together in some way.

8 Look at that blue sky!
Made by Jeannie.H
We had another dusting of snow last night, but it wasn't as cold as yesterday, so we went out and about today with Milo. We went to Paisley and had a wander around in the snow and the sunshine - it was beautiful and I managed totake a few photos. I really liked this against the blue sky - I think it lights up at night, but I'm not so keen to go to Paisley when it's dark!

Queue
Made by georgeupstairs
The driver of Western SMT 2170 deals on the one hand with a long queue of passengers waiting to board, while conversing with his colleague at the side of the bus. While all this was going on, the future Mrs Upstairs was holding a conversation with an elderly woman in the gardens opposite, on the pros and cons of marriage, which state we were at the time contemplating.

Guy Arab IV, GSD699
Made by cessna152towser
I have included this scan of a commercial photo by Robert Grieves among my personal photos as this is the only illustration I have of the bus on which I regularly travelled to school. Northern Counties bodied Guy Arab 6LW which served with Western from 1955 to 1969. The Brabloch Hotel in the background is now demolished, with new apartment blocks on the site.
