Oscar Niemeyer House
Made by !architect4!
A house in Santa Monica designed by Neimeyer in 1964- known as the Strick house. Neimeyer (b 1907) is now 98 yrs. old. This is one of the few buildings he ever did in the United States. When I toured the house in 2003 it was just completing a major restoration. Brazilian architect, proponent of modernism, designed many of the government buildings in the new capital of Brasília, winner of the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 1988. www.you-are-here.com/buildings/strick.html Oscar Niemeyer was born in the hillside district of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and has lived and worked in that area ever since, with occasional forays to France and Italy. As a student working in the office of Lucio Costa, a prominent architect, he was assigned to work on the plans of the Ministry of Public Instruction designed by the famous French architect Le Corbusier. It was while working on this project that he met the mayor of Brazil's wealthiest central state, Juscelino Kubitschek, who would later become President of Brazil. As President, he appointed Niemeyer to be the chief architect of Brasilia, a project which occupied all of his time for many years. Among his other world projects, he collaborated with Le Corbusier again on the design for the United Nations Headquarters in New York. His own residence in Rio de Janeiro has become a landmark. In the 1950's, he designed an Aeronautical Research Center near Sao Paulo. In Europe, he did an office building for Renault and the Communist Party Headquarters both in Paris, a cultural centre for Le Havre, and in Italy, the Mondadori Editorial Office in Milan and the FATA Office Building in Turin. In Algiers, he designed the Zoological Gardens, the University of Constantine, and the Foreign Office. Although semi-retired, he still works at the drawing board and welcomes young architects from all over the world. He hopes to instill in them the sensitivity to aesthetics that allowed him to strive for beauty in the manipulation of architectural forms.

Candid of Colin Walker at the Getty Villa
Made by DavidCharlesImages
There's something about capturing someone in a candid moment that's so enormously satisfying. And when they don't know you're there - when they're not preparing, posing, posturing, performing - it makes for a certain sincere honesty. Not that people don't normally have fun or can't get comfortable with a camera around, but there's often the smallest hint of stiffness or formality that remains as people ease into a relationship with you. Even experienced subjects - actors and directors, who understand the value of releasing their selves and connecting with others entirely - can guard a small piece of themselves in a real shoot. As far as good subjects go, Colin's on my A-list. He jokes around, he's gregarious, engaging and sharp, he cuts to the chase, and he's open-minded and adventurous. This shot came at the end of a weekend hanging out in LA. I love the almost brogue-ish blur of it. It captures an introspective moment as we walked through the gardens of the Getty Museum Villa after a long, wonderful day. There's a sense of fleeting time and timelessness. Colin's an inspired director and an inspiring friend, and he's easy to take good shots of, but this one is how I picture him as a Personality, how I like to imagine him at his most honest, without a pose.

The Villa Colonnade
Made by IceNineJon
There are two of these long colonnades outside the Getty Villa which lead visitors from the interior of the museum into a large garden. The ceiling is quite ornate as are the walls and floor. ABOUT THE SHOT HDR from three two stop incremental exposures. ABOUT THE SERIES The J. Paul Getty Museum is named after Jean Paul Getty, a billionaire oil tycoon from the first half of the 20th century. When he died he left over $661 million to the J. Paul Getty Trust which is now the world's wealthiest art institution. The Getty art museum used to be headquartered next to (and then on) Getty's home in Pacific Palisades but in 1997 they opened up the massive Getty Center in Brentwood. In November 2008, I went with some friends to the Getty Villa, the original site of the museum which now houses ancient Greek, Roman, and Etruscan art. The villa was built to resemble the Villa of the Papyri at Herculaneum so it's a natural fit to have these artifacts there. I recommend both the Getty Villa and the Getty Center for anyone who's visiting Los Angeles. The Villa has an interesting layout and the Getty Center has amazing architecture and views (the art is not bad either).

April 6, 2011: This photo is the runner-up in the Hydrangea contest in the group . Thank you! As some of you have already noticed, I have been uploading archive images for several weeks (no new work for health reasons since Nov. 26). Here's one from January 2010, when I visited the Lake Shrine of the local Self Realization Fellowship in Pacific Palisades. The flower looks like a hydrangea to me, but I'm not sure and would welcome a positive ID. (Zuiko 50mm macro, f/5.6, 1/125 sec., ISO 400, open shade, handheld) Thanks for all the confirmations that this is a hydrangea. Mariette Dodd even managed to come up with the exact variety (oakleaf hydrangea, Hydrangea quercifolia) without seeing a leaf. I did take additional photos at the time to document the leaf of the plant, and it is indeed oak-like rather than the usual pointed hydrangea leaf. I will be signing off early again tonight (I'm slowly getting over an infection that has been leaving me very tired). I will visit as many of your streams as I can manage. In the new Flickr, click anywhere in the image to see the large view on black -- or press L to view in light box (same thing).

Another shot of the long colonnade at the Getty Villa. Well, that's it from my trip to the Getty Villa. It's practically in my backyard so I'm sure I'll be back. Weather With You (dawn, Malibu Beach)
Made by Robin Black Photography
I've been in a pretty deep funk lately, creatively and personally, so after almost a month of no shooting at all I decided to embrace the mood. I knew there would be a heavy marine layer this morning, and thought the idea of shooting some nice, moody long exposure shots at sunrise at this particular spot might work nicely. It's an odd spot along the coast--the beach is narrow, and these old pilings run parallel to a line of rocks that also lead out into the surf. Since the beach slopes down somewhat sharply right here, those pilings are often completely submerged or completely exposed--catching them at a more visually pleasing halfway point at the right time of day is the challenge. I've played with black and white conversions of some of these shots, and will probably throw those up sometime later (right now they seemed a little TOO moody). But at least the creative dry spell is broken, and the headspace is a little better, too. Off to the east side for the weekend--hope everybody has a good one with lots of good light!

Neutra House > Living Room
Made by Man_of Steel
Hard to believe Modern from the '30's -is still valid today- THAT'S a CLASSIC! Listing Agents: Barry Sloane, Sotheby's International Realty, 310-786-1844 Due Diligence: Movie producer Jeffrey Levy-Hinte, whose resume includes the 2003 youth drama Thirteen, bought this 1934 house five years ago for $3 million. It was built for actress Anna Sten. Neutra, one of the most famous California architects, designed the house in the International Style, with rows of tall windows overlooking rolling lawns and the ocean. Mr. Levy-Hinte says he spent $4.5 million for a complete restoration, helped by Neutra's original drawings. Asked why he's selling the house for little more than its purchase and restoration costs, Mr. Levy-Hinte terms the price tag appropriate for the market. He says he's now spending more time away from Los Angeles. www.trulia.com/property/35934192-126-Mabery-Rd-Santa-Moni...

La Coltre dello Stregone
Made by Gene Fama
I had the great Luigi Crescenzi custom this beautiful leather half-case. It has an opening in back for the Thumbs Up CSEP mod 1 and is tethered with a rakish strap sized for Italian-hobbit wrists. The stitching looks white in photographs, but is actually a pimp semi-metallic silver-grey that echos the chrome accents of Leica lenses and bodies. (Go ahead. Copy this. Take your place among the manufacturers of wannabe cases on ebay Luigi rails against so entertainingly on his website.) It fits like shrink-wrap. The cutaways are tight and clever. Every part of the body possible is protected while exposing all the relevant controls. Beautiful leather. Bravissimo, sig. Luigi!

Happy Shamrock Day

Saint Patrick was a gentleman Who through strategy and stealth Drove all the snakes from Ireland Here's a drinkee to his health! But not too many drinkees Lest we lose ourselves and then... Forget the good Saint Patrick And see them snakes again! Oops, I almost forgot St. Patrick's Day. Okay, I admit it, I'm not Irish...well, maybe waaay back. Anyway, I saw this little diner in Santa Monica and thought a shot of it might be a good tribute. I read an article in the paper that this place, a local landmark which has been in business for many years, has to go. The landlord has given them their eviction notice and the locals are very unhappy. Another little piece of history and nostalgia...down the tubes. Flypaper Textures

Lake Shrine windmill (explored)
Made by Celeste M (off & on)
Flickr Explore #386 - January 6, 2010 No, I didn't make a quick trip to the Netherlands. :) This reproduction of a 16th-century Dutch windmill is a chapel on the grounds of the Self-Realization Fellowship Lake Shrine in Pacific Palisades, California. I hadn't visited this place in many years and thought New Year's weekend was a good time to go back. It's a very beautiful and peaceful place to spend a few hours, whether to read a book (as many were doing), feed the koi and birds in the lake (and perhaps have a swan nibble on your toe, as happened to me), or just walk around and find lovely photo opportunities. Find the hint of palm tree that tells you this really is California -- in the larger view

Night falls on Independence Day (Explore)
Made by xopherlance
The surface of the Earth is the shore of the cosmic ocean. On this shore, we've learned most of what we know. Recently, we've waded a little way out, maybe ankle-deep, and the water seems inviting. Some part of our being knows this is where we came from. We long to return, and we can, because the cosmos is also within us. We're made of star stuff. We are a way for the cosmos to know itself. -- Carl Sagan, Cosmos Let's revel in that, shall we? I took a bunch of pics of the fireworks in Pacific Palisades last night, but this was the only one I really liked. Probably because it reminds me of the cover art on Sagan's masterpiece. To Infinity and Beyond
Made by Extra Medium
Yesterday after work I had the extreme, near-fantasy pleasure of photographing corporate headshots in a bare-white office on a rainy day in Los Angeles. In case you’re as dumb as a bag of used staples, that was sarcasm. So I headed up PCH on the way home in the rain when I started to notice a break in the clouds. I got to this spot which I saved on my GPS a while ago. It was the remnants of an old pier or dock or something from long ago. Just the posts remain. The foundation. And just like life, if we build it on a solid foundation, regardless of the storms that hit our life, we should still be able to stand.

R8 Spyder
Made by Charlie Davis Photography
A gorgeous Audi R8 5.2FSI Spyder in the Palisades. Drove by, but I didn't have my camera with me so I just used my phone. Not a very good shot and really bad quality, but one of my favorite cars. Had a gorgeous weekend here in L.A., another week of our brutal winter xD Again, this is a phone shot form my BlackBerry Storm 1, but I actually like the composition; minus how bad the quality is :P ___________ Check out my new Facebook page! www.facebook.com/pages/Charlie-Davis-aka-chazzz15/1789487...

Unfortunately I have no ID on this lovely flower spray, captured about a year ago at the Lake Shrine of the Self-Realization Fellowship in Pacific Palisades, California. Overcome
Made by Spencer Finnley
Combat that fear, face such trepidation, overcome your worries, your tensions, and your nightmares. The only way home is through a dark and evil wood. But to choose such a path is to ultimately reach the light at the end of your journey. Will you go forth with courage... or will you let it overcome you? Tapioca! Get out the sugar and eggs....

Well, not really. This hardy tapioca or wild cassava is Manihot grahamii, a close relative of Manihot esculenta, the plant whose tubers are dried and processed into the pearls that become that stuff you can eat for dessert. Photographed in the extraordinary private garden of botanists Margaret and the late Harlan Lewis, former dean of Life Sciences at UCLA.

Butterflies are Free
Made by Gene Fama
Francesca was fine, but Rocco got a skull painted on his face that was almost impossible to remove. Once it came off, he looked like he was wearing mascara. The next morning he had a rash in the shape of the skull face that soon progressed to his face swelling and taking on the texture of an avocado. He looked like a doll version of himself. They sent him home from school until he got a doctor's note. Two days later it was gone.
