Oulu (listen help·info) (Uleåborg in Swedish) is a city and municipality of about 130,000 inhabitants in the province of Oulu and the region of Northern Ostrobothnia, in Finland. It is the largest and most important city in Northern Finland and the sixth largest city in the country. Its population growth rate is almost comparable with that of the Helsinki Metropolitan Area.
The city theatre
- Oulu City Art Museum (Oulun Taidemuseo), Kasarmintie 7, [4]. Located within an easy walking distance from the city centre. Due to renovations, the museum is closed 11.6.2007 - 31.12.2008.
- Science Centre Tietomaa (Tiedekeskus Tietomaa), Nahkatehtaankatu 2, [5]. Mon-Sun 10–19. The world's first science centre. Unfortunately a 'social invention' such as a science centre wasn't to be patented and the idea was copied all over the world. €13 for single adult ticket, €10 for children aged 6-15.
Quite close to Raatti swimming hall are the remaining ruins of the Castle of Oulu. Their café, Linnankahvila is open daily during summertime. It lies on the remaining premises of the Castle of Oulu after the explosion of gunpowder deposit (by a bulb of lightning) in the 18th century.

View towards the narthex down the nave at the Oulu cathedral. Notable features are obviously the organ, but also the votive ship. This is common in old churches near ports, as sailors donated models of their vessels to keep in the churches. Some of the old models can be pretty impressive.

There is a yearly event on May 1st where motorists gather for a sort of parade ride in Oulu. Close to 1500 bikes on the road. Standing on a high sidewalk with the old 135/3.5Q Nikkor sniping traffic going by. A few picks from the results.
