Hab heut die World Press Photo 11 in der Oude Kerk in Amsterdam besucht. War schlicht und einfach der HAMMER. Es waren nicht schöne Bilder, die da hingen - es waren Bilder, die etwas erzählten, auch wenn man den Begleittext nicht gelesen hatte. Meine gute Laune verflog im Laufe der Ausstellung und ich hätte heulen können, so mies war mir teilweise zu mute. Super Fotos - ich hab noch einen weeeeeeeeeiten Weg vor mir ^-^ Übrigens: Das Bild im Vordergrund ist das Siegerbild - dieser Afghanischen Frau wurden Ohren und Nase abgeschnitten, weil sie sich von ihrem Ehemann trennen wollte und zurück zu ihren Eltern zog.

De Oude Kerk One remnant of the Catholic Oude Kerk that escaped Calvinist destruction is the choir with its misericords - mercy seats to assist singers as they stand for long periods - that date from about 1480. As in many medieval churches, these seats are decorated with wooden carvings depicting everyday life and humorous scenes. Several of the misericords in the Oude Kerk depict proverbs, the most colourful of which is Money doesn't fall out of my arse - which we know in the more polite version of Money doesn't grow on trees. Another advises to Sail when the wind allows.

A humorous misericord which appears to show a nun punishing a naked man by caning him on the rear. Misericords were small seats or benches intended to provide some level of comfort for those standing during long periods of prayer. Religious themes were usually deemed too holy to suffer being sat upon so, so craftsmen working on the church were given free reign of creativity when creating them. They often depict everyday life, or as here, sometimes even slightly ribald or humorous events.

I wonder if I am starting to chase this exhibit around the world. Last year I saw the World Press Photo Award exhibition in Tokyo. This year it was in the Oude Kerk in Amsterdam when I had my 12 hour layover on the way back from Tanzania. I wonder where it'll be next year, I should book some plane tickets. I really like the use of the church as an exhibition space, it was nicely lit and had a lovely atmosphere. Plus pews to sit in when your feet got sore.

In front of the Old Church is this statue honoring those who engage in the oldest profession. Folks might wonder why anyone would choose this as a job. Other folks might argue why anyone would choose to be a nurse. Visit the Prostitution Information Center

Across the square from Oude Kerk are booths where you can hire prostitutes. They hate it when you take their picture, but I took this one covertly - you can make out at least one of the lady's relatively clearly, in the middle booth of the middle building.
