Hobbemakade, Amsterdam (Netherlands). Small vehicles of the Amsterdam Fire Brigade (De Nederlandse Brandweer). I imagine that these are not those that they use to extinguish fires, although they have fire extinguisher... In 1652 the old town hall of Amsterdam burnt down, while the new one (the current Royal Palace) was not finished yet. A lot of treasures and historical important charters were destroyed and the fire was a small disaster. Directly after the fire the municipal council bought 54 manual fire engines from Hans Hautsch in Nuernberg, Germany, with which the water could be pumped up to 15 meters. Amsterdam was by then a rapidly growing and very prospering city. One of the witnesses of the town hall fire was a twelve year old guy named Jan van der Heiden. This brilliant young lad was studying glasspainting and had fantastic organisational talents. In 1669 he submitted a plan for a public street lighting in the whole city of Amsterdam. He designed a lantern burning on oil, that was wind- and watertight and still got enough oxygen to stay alight. His plan was adapted and Jan built the lanterns and the organisation to light and extuinguish them. Only after that it was possible to go out at night, because the danger of walking into one of the many canals and of thieves and robbers was minimised. For the first time in history it was possible to go out at night to inns or brothels, which florished with the much longer opening times. You could say that Jan van der Heiden invented or in any case made possible the nightlife, for which Amsterdam is still famous. His street lighting system found following in the cities of Groningen, Berlin and St. Petersburg. Besides that he was a very good painter and drawer and he is recognised as one of the great Dutch masters of the 17th century. Jan van der Heiden was as important for fire fighting history in Europe as George Washington was for the history of the U.S.A. He invented the use of fire hose, improved the manual fire engines, organised the first real volunteer fire brigade in his part of the world and wrote and illustrated the first book on the subject of firefighting. The first trial of the use of hose was in 1672 with a the portable watersack. At the canal men on a ladder filled the watersack in a trestle with buckets. From the trestle, which was higher than the fire engine the water flowed to the engine in a linen hose, where the water entered a tank from which the pump gave it to the spout under pressure. The results were very good and within a few weeks the Van der Heiden brothers (Jan and Nicolaas) were appointed engineers of the city's fire engines. They were only responsible for the quality and maintenance of the engines, not the way these were used. That came only in 1685. In 1673 another - far more exiting - trial took place. To one of the city's 60 fire engines they connected a leather hose on the place of the spout and put the spout at the other end of the hose. Thus creating the first attackhose. The attack- or extinguishing hose, transporting water under pressure, had to be of a tougher material and was made of leather. The sewing of leather was not an unknown craft in the seafaring industry of Amsterdam. With these improvements it was not longer necessary to place the pump near the water or under the fire (which had caused many deaths when buildings collapsed), but somewhere inbetween. Besides that, the water could now be brought into the burning rooms instead of against them. You could say that the Van der Heidens invented the interior attack of fires. In the years after the trial of 1673 the Van der Heiden brothers rebuilt all the city's old engines and built new engines to their own design, that were lighter and easier to handle. Beside the inventions Jan van der Heiden organised the City of Amsterdams fire fighting organisation. He formed the first real volunteer fire brigade in 1685, of which he and his son (also named Jan) were the first fire chiefs. Source: www.brandweer.nl/cms/show/id=497806. Amsterdam - Stedelijk Museum - Barbara Kruger - Past/Present/Future Push L to watch on black ! Barbara Kruger’s work with pictures and words addresses mass culture’s representations of power, identity and sexuality. As she has stated, “I work with pictures and words because they have the ability to determine who we are, what we want to be, and what we become.” The range of Kruger’s works is broad—from photographic prints on paper and vinyl to videos, room-size installations, public commissions, printed matter, and a variety of merchandise. Using the language of direct address and words like “you,” “me,” “we,” and “they,” her works reach out into the social space of the spectator. In this installation—designed especially for the building’s largest gallery, known as the Hall of Honor—Kruger’s wraps the floor and walls with printed texts that “speak” directly and loudly to the spectator in a chorus of voices. Her provocative, emotionally charged statements about how people regard and treat each other disrupt the decorum of a traditional museum space. Bringing the world into her work and her work into the world, she confronts stereotypes and clichés, shattering them with a rigorous critique, a generous empathy and a sharp wit.

Bird at the river

Thanks to EVERYBODY to COMMENTS and VISITS in my photos!!! * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * THIS PHOTO WAS CHOSEN FOR THE SCHMAP!!!!!! www.schmap.com/amsterdam/sights_rembrandtplein/#r=none&am... Amsterdam is the capital and largest city of the Netherlands, located in the province of North Holland in the west of the country. The city, which had a population of around 1 million (with suburbs) on 1 January 2008, comprises the northern part of the Randstad, the 6th-largest metropolitan area in Europe, with a population of around 6.7 million. Its name is derived from Amstel dam, indicative of the city's origin: a dam in the river Amstel where the Dam Square is today. Settled as a small fishing village in the late 12th century, Amsterdam became one of the most important ports in the world during the Dutch Golden Age, a result of its innovative developments in trade. During that time, the city was the leading center for finance and diamonds. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the city expanded and many new neighbourhoods and suburbs were formed. (Wikipedia)

Reflections Of Amsterdam - Bikesk8ing
Made by AmsterS@m - The Wicked Reflectah
Unedited mobile phone cam shot of a guy pushing his bike at the Museumplein in Amsterdam, reflected in a puddle. No editing, no magic tricks, no Photoshop :) Yesterday the streets were so iced over that I was actually getting really worried every time I saw another biker coming my way that we might slip, collide and explode in this giant mushroom of body- and bike-parts that you could have seen from outer space or at least on Google Earth...except for the exploding part this is a true story and it could happen to you (if you, like me, are stoopid enough to bike around in the best city in the world while it's frozen) ;-D Luckily our city council keeps the remaining salt in the storage facilities and does not do anything about the people falling and cracking their skulls open, so that once this Winter is over, Amsterdam will be populated by a super-race of extra sturdy, unbreakable people, survival of the fittest baby! Almost weekend! www.amstersam.com

Measuring the Universe / Explored
Made by Iam sterdam

The name of this elephant isFull Colorphant, and paint by Clemens Briels. This elephant is a part of the Art Elephant Parade Amsterdam. The Elephant Parade is founded by father and son Mike and Marc Spits. With their project, they aim to raise attention for the Asian elephant, that is threatened with extinction. Their project has proven to be succesful: the first two editions of the Elephant Parade, held in Rotterdam and Antwerp, raised a total amount of over 700,000 euro. The benefits of the Elephant Parade are donated to the Elephant Family, the largest elephant charity in the world and was founded in 2002 by Mark Shand. He is a globetrotter, philantropist and writer and maker of the BBC documentary Queen of the Elephants.

Ceintuur Theater, Amsterdam - facade
Made by Roloff
One of the prettiest purpose-built cinema theatres in The Netherlands, the Ceintuur Theater was erected in 1921, designed by architect Willem Noorlander. It was also one of the first buildings in Amsterdam to be constructed of enforced concrete. This not only allowed for a stunning Art Deco facade, but also a balcony that didn't need support from view-obstructing beams or columns. The cinema opened on April 2nd, 1921. The last show was on the 30th of December, 1976. In Photoshop I've painstakingly removed all the tram's powerlines that were obscuring this masterpiece, which is my favorite theatre (architecture wise), with the Tuschinski. In 2004 the building got a national monumental status (Rijksmonument), #527853.

[EXPLORE, Oct, 7 2010] One of my favorite type of photography, catching people when they are riding their bicycle. I spent 2 days in the best European country for that, the beautifull city of Amsterdam. That type of view is typical, people going to work or school by byke under a foggy weather. out of yarn
Made by mararie
oh no, i'm almost done with my norwegian stockings and now i've run out of white yarn! and i only need to knit 7/22 star plus 3 rows that contain 1/3 of white, how frustrating! even worse is that this colour of yarn is not produced anymore. i already had to knit this using yarns of different dye baths and now i run out of the real colour too. i have a dale of norway at home that is almost the same colour, but just a little bit more yellow. maybe i can borrow some of , i think she uses the same colour for her cardigan. but anyway, i won't be able to knit in the train tomorrow and saturday, how boring!

Waterside fun at The Vondelpark, Amsterdam.
Made by kees straver
Here I was cycling around in Amsterdam on a wonderful sunny spring day when I came across this lovely family. Apparently they decided to have a walk and a swing in the Vondelpark. The Vondelpark is a beautiful park in the hart of Amsterdam and a great place to forget you’re in a city and enjoy the lovely scenes this park has to offer. Ps. I wand to thank everybody for all the tips you gave me regarding my sisters wedding, the encouraging comments and for keeping my feet on the ground :-). Unfortunately I wouldn’t be able to show you the photo’s immediately, but more on that tomorrow ;-).

A walk in the rain
Made by MarcelGermain
Amsterdam (Netherlands) - December 2007 “Color is the place where our brain and the universe meet.” (Paul Klee) As soon as I saw this guy with the umbrella I knew I wanted to take this picture, but because of the rain he was walking so fast it was very hard to keep up... so I ended up following him, almost running behind him, until I was able to take this. He never noticed I was there... the whole experience was really really fun, actually. =) Winner of the @ The World Though my Eyes! Wow, thanks! =D Explore #37 (Deccember 20, 2007) - Thank you for all your comments and faves!

Reflections Of Amsterdam - Sharing Is Caring
Made by AmsterS@m - The Wicked Reflectah
Unedited mobile phone cam shot of a guy&a girl sharing one bike, reflected in a puddle. No editing, no magic tricks, no Photoshop :) Sharing your bike with somebody else is a good thing, it saves resources and space in the street, if everybody in Amsterdam would take another person on the back of their bike, this place would be even lovelier than it is already...but with these harsh Winter weather conditions you have to be double careful, because if you fall, you both fall :) Almost weekend! www.amstersam.com

[Knock knock] "Who is there?"
Made by Amsterdam RAIL
The cause? A minor failure of the track surface. Combine this with some speed and maybe some slightly warn wheel bandages or wheel flanges and there you have the recipe for a result like this. And it wasn't the first time. An identical accident happened on the same spot some time before this accident would take place. The only difference was the number of the tram: the first time it would be GVB 632 (OKtober 22nd 1970). Now it was GVB 631. Good to know that 633, 634, 635, etc. stayed on track in the years that followed... Amsterdam Weesperzijde/Ruysstraat - August 20, 1973

I'm reposting the new version of this photo for two reason: - I'de like to show everyone what I've been up to. This is for my upcoming portfolio. I retouched fourtyfive photo's for this very reason (see the set). - To thank all those who have helped me through the proces, including a lot of flickrfriends. Slightly edited mobile phone cam shot of a girl at the Museumplein in Amsterdam, reflected in a puddle. No editing besides some added contrast&saturation, no magic tricks, no Photoshop :) I am not sure if it's politically correct to call this picture 'The Puddle Geisha', this lady might not even be Japanese and she might totally hate the idea of being referred to as a 'Geisha', but I did it anyway, sorry lady :) Weekend's coming up! www.amstersam.com

Orange flowers
Made by ivoandreas
Thousands of orange flowers were dropped from 2 helicopters flying over the Museumplein in Amsterdam during the 2010 Worldcup final between the Netherlands and Spain. A truely unforgetable day that sadly ended in tragedy for me and millions of Dutch football fans. We're still proud to be No. 2 of the world though ;) Which helicopter? astrowatch
Made by mararie
i bought a real venker astrowatch! i want this one for 7 years, but i thought it would be impossible to find one. they were made around 1980 in a limited edition of 1500 watches. now, astrologers pay a lot of money to get one 2nd hand. i could get it quite cheap :) for people that know somehing of astrology: it shows the medium coeli and the ascendant. i want to stress here that i do not believe in astrology (especially not the astrology that most people think it's astrology), but i like it a lot!
