This easter we decided to be tourists in our own town and culture. We went to orthodox midnight mass to feel a different culture. S is a non-believing christian (so a member of church) and I am simply a pagan, left the church membership when started to study at university. Still there is something intriguing in the religions. The ceremonies are so carefully constructed, better theathre than the one one sees staged. And the religious experience is so close to aesthetic experience, that being interested in the later, I cannot skip the former. Orthodox mass was really different from the lutheran one. Much more enjoyable and mysterious. They did not try to prove that there's a God, just did the things. It seems to work better with religions that way. One has things to sense: see, hear, smell, feel. Not just a church with only abstract symbols and emptiness where at least I had the problem of hearing, sensing the holiness (which in my mind cannot be proven anyhow but as a feeling). S listens carefully the singing here, a man sleeps in a sitting position in the background. It's night, after all.
