I always wanted to take pictures at Oppenheimer Park. As a photographer, I am very much attracted at the Downtown Eastside. Real people, crazy stories, despair and death so close to our quiet homes... I feel I need to talk about it when new people come to town, and I always thought it needs to be documented. But the camera circus going on there makes me very unconfortable. I am often going into the DTES with a CBC cameraman, to do TV stories, as a reporter, and I do not always enjoy it, although I am fascinated by the neighbourhood and its stories. But as a photographer, I cannot take a picture of somebody in the street and leave. I think everybody should have the decence to spend some time there and talk the people, ask about their lives. But how to do it, without making it look like I am a tourist from Mount Pleasant, and I walked here to get my dose of Adrenaline? I still do not know... This Providence Health Care event allowed me to go there for the first time with my camera, shoot without feeling bad, and talking to some of the customers this day...
