For my 5000th upload to Flickr, a photo with a memory attached to it. Undoubtedly the transport highlight of this normal's holiday to the Croatian town of Opatija for me was a couple of rides (one through Opatija town, the other out from Rijeka) on this machine - MAN Avtomontaza beast RI-593-JE. For the British bus fans among you, think Volvo Ailsa crossed with Bristol RE! All the better with a complete thrash merchant at the wheel. 25/08/11.


Maiden with the Seagull

Opatija is known for the Maiden with the seagull, a statue by Zvonko Car (1956), which is positioned on a promontory by the Juraj Šporer art pavilion. It has turned into one of symbols of Opatija. A gilded variant of the statue Madonna, that once stood here but was demolished by communists after the end of WWII, now stands in front of the Saint Jacob Church.
