READ THIS: They are filming the new Batman: The Dark Knight movie all over Chicago. So, I decided to walk over from my office to the set at the old Post Office building and take a few photo's (yes, I know many similar photo's are already on Flickr). Here's what happened . . . Me: Snap, snap, snap (standing on public sidewalk) Rent-a-cop: (waving hands) Hey, hey, you can't take pictures here Me: (adopting Joe Citizen role) Its a free country Rent-a-cop: Sorry, no photo's Me: I'm on public property. I can take pictures of anything I want Rent-a-cop #2: It's against the law Me: What's against the law? Rent-a-cop #2: Its against the law to take pictures of a Federal building Me: (sarcastically): Yeah, like they're arresting thousands of tourists everyday in front of the White House or Constitution Hall Movie company flunkies now approach Movie company flunkie: Well, its against the law! Me: What law? Movie company flunkie #2: The Patriot Act Me: The Patriot Act! Have you ever read the Patriot Act? Movie company flunkie #2: No. Me: Well I have (bluffing, but just a bit - I've scanned it and read summaries) and it doesn't say anything about photographing Federal buildings, other buildings, or anything else for that matter Rent-a-cop #1: You want me to call a cop? Me: Sure, he'll explain the First Amendment to you (I said stupidly) Cop: (Nicely) Sir, please step over to the other side of the street. [We move over]. What are you taking pictures for? Me: I'm an amateur photographer. Why, does the First Amendement vary for different types of citizens? Cop: Look, I make even less on this job then when I'm a regular cop. Did you get the photo's you wanted? Me: Yeah, I guess so (thinking: what does your salary have to do with my rights. But, I know what he's thinking -- this isn't worth the hassle (for him)) Cop: Sir, could you do me a favor and just move on? Me: Okay, but (adopting my best Schwarzenegger attitude) I'll be back! [and, I did go back after work. They hassled me again, but I just told them to screw off, and, hey, they did]

Chicago aka. Gotham City

Chicago aka. Gotham City

The old Post Office at 433 West Van Buren was transformed into the Gotham National Bank for The Dark Knight, the sequel to Batman Begins, which filmed in Chicago last summer and fall. Since the majority of the filming was done inside the building, hopeful fans only got small glimpses of the cast and crew. I was lucky, and was able to be an extra one day for a shot that was done on LaSalle near the Board of Trade building. Film and TV crews frequently use Chicago as a backdrop or filming location! UPDATE: The film releases on Friday, July 18th. thedarkknight.warnerbros.com/ * * * This picture appeared on summerinchicago.com on Wednesday, July 2, 2008.

So Sorry Chicago...

We didn't mean to set your historical landmark on fire while filming our stupid movie and being rude to you as you walk down the sidewalk to work. Oh wait, they aren't apologizing, they're claiming they had nothing to do with it? So this building sits empty for over 10 years and in the two weeks you inhabit it with a bunch of electronics and hot movie lights and gadgets is when it decides to catch a blaze. What a strange coincidence.

Gotham City's Police Department, or at least the set as seen on the east side of the old post office building. When I was there they had a bunch of actors dressed in SWAT uniforms. But, they were filming inside so I couldn't see anything.

Alone in the Big City

A woman waits alone on a surprisingly (and momentarily) empty rush-hour corner at Wacker and Madison. That's the Civic Opera Building across the street.
