Old Jewish Cemetery in Josefov, Prague, Czech Republic Some background information: The Old Jewish Cemetery in Prague is probably the most noted Jewish cemetery all over Europe. It’s located in Josefov, which is the Jewish Quarter of Prague. The cemetery was in use from the early 15th century until 1787. The oldest preserved tombstone, the one of the rabbi Avigdor Kara, dates back to 1439. The predecessor of this cemetery was called The Jewish Garden, which was found in archaeological excavations under the Vladislavova street in Prague’s New Town. The numbers of graves and people buried there are uncertain, because there are so many layers of tombs. However it has been estimated that there are approximately 12,000 tombstones presently visible and there may be as many as 100,000 burials in all. According to Jewish religious law Jews mustn't destroy Jewish graves. In particular it’s not allowed to remove the tombstones. Therefore the cemetery ran out of space sometime. As purchasing extra land was impossible, more layers of soil were placed on the existing graves and the decedents were buried in up to twelve layers. The old tombstones were always taken out and put back upon the new layer of soil. This explains why the tombstones in the cemetery are placed so closely to each other and the cemetery entails such a picturesque up and down of the ground. Some gravestones are even decorated with animals or objects, which symbolize the family names of the decedents. Important personalities buried in the Old Jewish Cemetery are the rabbi and author Avigdor Kara, the famous rabbi Judah Loew, who used to be the originator of the Prague Golem, the mayor and minister of finance Mordechai Maisel , the historian and astronomer David Gans as well as the chief rabbi David Oppenheim. The Old Jewish Cemetery is enclosed by a huge wall and nestled between Pinkas and Klaus Synagogue. The Jewish Museum, where many Jewish cultural objects and paintings are exhibited, is situated next to the cemetery. Despite the admission fee is quite high, there’s always a long queue of people waiting at the entrance of the Old Jewish Cemetery. And despite this already high admission fee, one has to pay another fee to obtain the permission to take photos there. Being still outside it was a little bit annoying for us, but after entering the burial ground, we really felt that it was worth doing.

Kvitelach, קוויטלך, little notes, Old Jewish Cemetery, Prague
Made by herb_st85
Kvitel (Yiddish: קוויטל, little note; plural קוויטלך, Kvitelach) refers to a practice developed by Hasidic Judaism in which a Hasid (a follower of Hasidic Judaism) writes a note with a petitionary prayer and gives it to a Rebbe (Hasidic Jewish leader) in order to receive the latter's blessing. This prayer may be a general request for health, livelihood, or success, or a specific request such as recovery from illness, the ability to bear children, a wedding match, etc. The writing, giving and reading of a kvitel is treated very seriously by Hasid and Rebbe alike, and is executed according to specific protocols. Because of their inherent sanctity, kvitelach may not be thrown away after use; they are either burned or buried. The practice of giving kvitelach continues today in all the Hasidic courts. Kvitelach are also placed on the graves of Rebbes and tzadikim (plural of tzadik, or Jewish holy man) with the hope that the soul of the deceased will intercede for the petitioner in Heaven. It is a centuries-old custom for Jews to place kvitelach containing personal prayers to God between the stones of the Western Wall in Jerusalem. This practice has been also adopted by Christian pilgrims and foreign dignitaries as well. More than a million prayer notes are placed in the Western Wall each year. … (Wikipedia)

If you want to catch the light on the old jewisch cemetery you really need to have good timing... Too early and the sun is still blocked by the houses around it. Too late and it's already too harsh. You need to be there when the sun comes out behind the buildings. Stunning place! Info The Old Jewish Cemetery lies in the Josefov, the Jewish Quarter of Prague in the Czech Republic. The Jewish cemetery was created in 1439 (this way it dates first Avigdor Karo's tablet) and, though it was growing throughout the years, everything due did not spread and nowadays it is possible to estimate all his character intácto. Due to the lack of space the bodies were buried some on others (coming to more than 10 piled up ones). Today you can see more than 12.000 tablets can be seen and it thinks that it can have buried approximately 100.000 persons.(google translator...sorry)

Prague had a Jewish enclave going far back in history. They buried their deceased in this graveyard, adding dirt and layers over the centuries. The old stones, some with dates from the 1400's twist and turn as the ground has settled. One thing that is very somber about this Jewish enclave was that over 100,000 of them were sent to the concentration camps by Hitlers Nazis where most died, destroying the Jewish population in this country. The names of each person is hand written on the walls of an ancient synagogue next to this cemetery. I had to pay extra to take photos inside the cemetery and it was worth it to have these images. Update: photo was update with one processed in Lightroom from a raw (NEF) exposure. Original one was JPG from Picasa while traveling.

Some of the gravestones which stand inside the Old Jewish Cemetery in the Josefov ghetto district of Prague. It was established in the 15th century and used until 1787, when it became too full to take any more of the dead. It sits in the middle of the ghetto and is part of the Jewish Museum that encompasses numerous other synagogues and locations as well. The space is really small and confined and, as a result, many of those buried here are piled on top of each other anyway and the tombstones are arranged in a very packed fashion. The bodies are buried six palms apart and in places they are as many as 12 deep. The cemetery is almost cut off from the rest of the city as it rises above the ground and has high walls around the outside.

After Amsterdam, Laura and I headed to Prague with Luke and Stephanie. It was about a 6 hour drive from Kandern to Prague and the Garmin worked like a champ! The first thing we did was go to the Jewish Quarter of Prague. We visited the Pinkas Synagogue, where the names of all the Czech Jews who were victims of World War II are written on the walls. Behind the Synagogue is this cemetery. The gravestones have been placed all over and are disorganized because the space was limited so the bodies were burried on top of each other.

The Old Jewish Cemetery in Prague is the only part of the Jewish Museum where you are allowed to take captures with paying a small fee. I know that cemetery since 1980, together with some friends I visited Prague from Berlin in December and we were guided there by an old and friendly lady who was in the need to earn some money to raise her small return. If I remember well, we eight were the only visitors that time. Now it is a bit different.

The old jewish cemetery in Josefov, the Jewish Quarter of Prague. On this little plot of land you have approximately 12,000 tombstones but an estimated 100,000 people were buried there over the course of about 300 years (with the last burial taking place in 1787). The most famous tomb has to be Rabbi Löws who according to lore created the Golem to guard the jewish ghetto...

Old Jewish cemetery of Prague, dating from at least 1439 to 1787. As the Jews were confined to the ghetto, there was no room for the cemetery to expand but up. Eventually, up to 100,000 may have been buried here up to 12 deep. 12,000 tombstones line this relatively small area.
