A deliberate attempt to get the architectural verticals parallel purely by camera positioning. The idea is to take in the height of the building with a wide angle shot and the camera held level. That results in an equal amount of irrelevant foreground below the height of the camera (in this case ground level). That then is cropped off. This is sometimes known as the poor man's tilt shift. In effect a tilt shift lens allows you to place the entire camera sensor at this place in the larger virtual image space of the lens. This method does it by cropping. A slight droop has resulted in a slight divergence of the verticals as they rise, which is possibly a good effect? The very slightly bulging fatness of the building is due to slight barrel distortion of the Sony R1's zoom when used at this maximum wide angle. It's very hard (i.e. very costly) to make a zoom with a wide end which doesn't have at least slight barrel distortion at its widest end. [I later produced an improved version of this image using perspective transforms and lens distortion correction, embodied in this case in PTLens. The .] PTLens completely removes the slight barrel distortion, and although it lose a little bit of detail resolution in doing its stuff, it can also correct chromatic aberration. In this case the gain in edge detail by reducing chromatic aberration is I think a little more than is lost by the processing, so there is a slight net gain in detail resolution.] Original DSC02705

This building has become a kind of benchmark with which to try out my developing architectural photographic skills and technology. . This is a much wider angle photograph taken with a Sony A350 and a Sigma 10-20mm at 10mm, and viewed from the other end. The original uptilt perspective was corrected by PTLens. The original auto white balance chose to show the pale end of the building as white, which it is. But the light from the semi-clouded late afternoon sun was a little golden. an effect I've exaggerated a little by picking a grey cloud as a pure grey colour reference. Here is another very wide angle (10mm) view of the same block. Original DSC00406_pt

Perspective of original uptilted 10mm photograph corrected to give parallel verticals by PTLens (and the slight moustache geometric distortion of the lens at this focal length corrected as well). Possibly all modern lenses are as good at controlling internal flare as this, but I learned my original photographic rules of thumb back in the old days of film and lens flare fog. I'm still amazed and delighted that it's possible to take this kind of photograph with today's technology! The apparently very sharp edge of the near corner of the building is not entirely a wide angle perspective effect. This corner is acute (less than square), as can be seen from . Original DSC00411_pt

You could say this office building was crying out to me to be photographed. It was a glorious sunny day and the white of the building against the blue of the clear sky just made this image for me. I think the office security were wondering what the heck was happening when they saw me taking the image, as I was lying on my back on the floor. Apparently the security cameras were all trained on me as I took it.
