The Sally Anne (A Ghost Story)
Made by nlwirth
In 1924, the Sally Anne set sail from the shores of England, its cargo a combination of weapons, whiskey, opium and, some say, the worst criminals that had ever wreaked havoc in the streets of London, scum so fiendish that authorities had no problem turning a blind eye to the manifest. When the Sally Anne sailed into the San Francisco Bay, after a journey plagued by storm troubled waters, it was greeted by a fog so thick that the captain, it has been claimed (though by whom—no one knows), feared his ship had been enveloped by ghosts. Only one man survived the crash against the treacherous rocks, and when first asked what had happened he whimpered and stuttered like the salty sea dog everyone assumed him to be. The next morning, as the fog cleared, no sign of any wreckage could be found, nor any bodies— and since no one from England was willing to verify that the boat had ever existed, let alone set sail for San Francisco, that sole survivor was deemed as mad as his mutterings, mutterings that, in the weeks that followed, later unfolded into stories of whiskey, opium, guns, and mutiny—all ending in an overflowing bath of blood that threatened to turn all of the sea crimson. In the months that followed, the local pubs were filled with stories of demons and booze and drugs and vengeance— of blood curdling cries soon vanquished by those ever so black rocks that had caught many a ship in its solid web of stone so many times before— but soon the stories trickled away as memories often do. However, a year later, a shimmering ship suddenly appeared in the fog, a ship that some claimed bore a remarkable resemblance to what the Sally Anne must have looked like—at least its darkened silhouette (though no one actually knew what it had looked like)— but it vanished into the fog in an instant that was as mournful as the foghorns that had failed to save this unknown ship from its destiny with the rocks, an instant that was as mysterious as the churning waters that had swallowed it whole—leaving only the mad ravings of that lunatic survivor who most had forgotten. When asked if he knew anything, he only laughed, and said such memories— memories as gruesome and drenched in evil as these— never allow you to let go, always returning even if they are little more than the fickle fancies of imagination. And the sightings continued, and still continue, year after year, as long as this story is still told, the ship always appearing in the sifting summer fog as the foghorns bellow their cries like sirens to any who will listen. I have always scoffed at the story, saying it was just a silly tale told to gullible school kids, but then late last night … I witnessed what must have been the Sally Anne setting sail for its fleeting seconds through the fog … before vanishing again … its mystery always enduring as long as the memories of those who hear and tell its story … even if it is little more than a blur caught in the sideway glance of a passerby or an image captured by a camera held in the shaking hands of a disbeliever.

Sutro Islands
Made by Andy Frazer
SUTRO BATHS, SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- This is the last Sutro Baths shot for this year, I promise. I've always had a love/hate relationship with this place. When I took the Nocturnes night photography workshop six years ago, I saw other photographers' shots of Sutro and I instantly knew I had to go there. So, I went there. It was totally fogged in, and I almost froze off my kahunas. I went back a few months later. It wasn't as cold, but it was completely overcast. A third trip the following year, same thing. Later on I learned that the coast of the northern end of the San Francisco Bay usually gets overcast at night during the Spring and Summer and most of the Fall. I've since learned that the best time to shoot the coast at night is after October, and sometimes September. It works. The past three years I've shot at Sutro in each of September ('05), December ('06) and November ('07), usually with clear skies. January is probably clear skies, too, if it's not pouring rain. Some people shoot there once, and then never go back. I could go back once a year (and the same for the Marin Headlands) and never get bored. I get better results each time I go there. If you go, wear good shoes, and watch where you step, because the seawall is booby trapped with protruding rebar and wet rock. This shot was three minutes under a full moon, a mega floodlight from the Cliff House Restaurant, and some carefully placed sodium vapor lighting from the streetlights up on the cliff. Take a walk in the park ! Golden Gate Park windmill facts The history of Golden Gate Park's north and south windmills: 1870: The Act to Provide for the Improvement of Public Parks in the City of San Francisco'' creates Golden Gate Park. 1901: The Recreation and Park Commission authorizes the construction of a windmill 300 yards from the ocean. This windmill could take advantage of the prevailing winds to pump water for park irrigation. 1902: The Dutch (north) windmill is completed at a cost of $25,000. 1905: Samuel Murphy, vice president of Hibernia Bank, finances the south (Murphy) windmill. It becomes the largest of its kind in the world. 1913: Motorized pumps are installed to augment the wind-driven system. With the windmills no longer performing a primary function, their maintenance is neglected and they eventually cease to operate. 1964: Eleanor Rossi Crabtree, daughter of late Mayor Angelo Rossi, initiates a campaign to save the north, or Dutch, windmill. 1980: As a result of the campaign, the north windmill gets cosmetic repairs. 1993: The San Francisco Recreation and Park Department, with San Francisco Beautiful, arranges for an extensive study of the south (Murphy) windmill. Lucas Verbij, a Dutch windmill design and construction expert, concludes that the windmill is in need of immediate attention. 2000: The city commits $500,000 toward Murphy Windmill restoration.

Ocean Beach

I took a couple hours this evening to take some shots along San Francisco's Ocean Beach at dusk, and then the Sutro Bath ruins after dark. The Sutro Baths Ruins are located just on the other side of Cliff House, the restaurant perched upon the rocks in this scene. Nothing really extraordinary came out of the evening unfortunately. One of my favorite shots from this evening was taken almost exactly where this one way but a little later. I ended up realizing I've essentially seen that shot before so now I don't really want to upload it - it already been done, and better. I suppose I may have hit that point where I can't seem to find a new way of framing my shots out there that I haven't already seen before. I'm sure I just need to explore a little more and get creative, but as for this evening I guess I was sort of in a lull. That said, I do like this shot, and the B&W treatment. For the most part it wasn't too tricky, although a couple times I had to grab my tripod and run back to higher ground as waves came rushing back in. It's a balance between having wet sand in the foreground for the reflections, and NOT having wet feet for the rest of the evening. I'm happy to report I kept my feet dry. Stairway to Hell

I got home finally after an arduous ordeal with MUNI. Those who take MUNI know that it is probably the worst public transportation system in America. So I look outside my window and I debate to myself if I should go to the gym or shoot. I think to myself, shit I'm a 400 pound beached whale and I better get myself to the gym. I procrastinate some more, and some more, and a little bit more and proceed to just sit on my fat ass procrastinating. I look outside my backyard window again and think I better get some exercise and get shooting. Many of you who have met me know that I'm an obese whale so it was a difficult task getting myself off the bed and into the car to take that 5 minute drive to this location but I think it was worth it. :) I stumbled into Sutro Baths Ninja, and his ninja-in-training brother, Andrew who were soaking up the sea mist and good light. When I set up, it was a nice 50 degrees with 30mph winds - just the way I love shooting. 5dII, 16-35II, 3 stop reverse naaaasty! P.S. It was so red, I had to desaturate/devibrance it -10. P.P.S I've been shooting a ton, and yes I've been a naughty slow loader, but I just wanted to post this image before I forget about it like the rest of my images. :(

pacific

for the assignment our relationship with water i originally intended to get in the water, to be consumed by the water; but when i got to ocean beach in san francisco this one saturday morning, it was near 40 degrees and practically raining. besides that, technicalities defied me–i didn't want to lose my remote to the pacific. apparently, surf was up, too. the waves were dotted with surfers. i didn't have a wetsuit or an assistant, so i walked down a mile or so before checking the beach again for any clear areas. every bit of that beach was occupied by people walking or running or throwing frisbees at their dogs. it's like they greyer the day, the more people want to get out in it, which i suppose it a lot better of a decision than to wallow inside. so eventually, i thought, it's now or never. i came here to learn about myself, didn't i? and i went down to the beach and pretended i knew what i was doing setting up my camera on my tripod, then covering it with my towel to protect it from the mist, i traded my nice warm coats for this filmy strip of liner fabric and then got as close to the ocean as my senses would allow. i blocked out as best i could everything going on around me and let the wind and the ocean work their magic.

San Francisco

More photos in comments. Talk about a beautiful weekend in San Francisco. The sun was out and there was a nice cool ocean breeze. It was perfect. After much back and forth on what to do for the day, Elle decided to stay in boring Palo Alto and go on a hike. While I was driving home from the gym, she called me and said “hey I’m at your house in San Francisco, let’s go fly a kite.” So Elle and Kai came over, I changed into shorts and a polo shirt and we drove to the beach. It took us a while to get started since none of us have flown a kite since we were kids. It ended up being a lot of fun. I brought out my Nikkor 16mm and hooked on a graduated neutral density filter and here we are. Its almost impossible to see the strings of the kit but they’re there! The photo of me below, literally seconds after the shot was taken the kite did a nose dive which I couldn’t recover come and came within 3 feet of crushing the 2 guys in the distance. God, that would have been sooooooo funny. Bummer! Next time. Taken with a Nikon D300 w/ a 16-85mm VRII f/3.5 Nikkor Lens GND - Graduated 0.6 Black / Clear Neutral Density Filter

Rainbows in the Sand

Rainbow Flip Flops in the Sand on Saturday in San Francisco! It was an incredibly nice day on Saturday... so going to the beach wasn't all too terrible haha. It was actually perfect, showed up with my Nikon, shorts, tshirt and I walked towards the water to look for things to photograph. I tried a few sea shells, a dead crab, my own feet... but nothing came out. Sand is actually really difficult to photograph.. I went to the beach thinking how hard can it be? Apparently pretty tricky... Anyway I sat down on the sand thinking about what to photograph and looked at my flip flops and well... here we are. I looked kinda stupid though, at the beach, everyone's having a great time playing in the water, flying kites, sun tanning... and here I am photographing my flip flops. Rainbow flip flops are awesome... get a pair! Btw... to all the Mom's out there, hope you had a great mother's day! This is for the group This is a fun little group where every Monday, a macro photograph is submitted for the week's theme. This week's theme was Sand. Taken with a Nikon D50 w/ a 60mm f/2.8 Micro Nikkor Lens... Natural Light For A Change!!!

Lunch at Sutro's
Made by MumbleyJoe (Tyler)
Having spent a good part of the afternoon driving around Marin and fighting the fleet week crowds to get anywhere we decided to hit the coast in San Francisco and get a light lunch at Cliff House. It's been a while since I was there but the memory was that you could still get a reasonable bowl of clam chowder or something like that. It turns out it's gone much more upscale than I knew. We were given a menu before we were seated to make sure we didn't have any misconceptions about what we were getting into (a little condescending I must say). Anyways, the food was actually terrific and not quite as costly as I'd expected particularly with the amazing views. Going clockwise you've got a cheeseburger with white cheddar and applewood smoked bacon, served with a side of truffled frites (fantastic!). A Pint of Anchor Steam. A bowl of Heirloom tomato soup, with basil out and crostini with Point Reyes Blue cheese (fantastic!). And a glass of Mendocino Sauvignon Blanc. Definitely an experience worth taking in for a periodic bit of self-endulgance. Nikon D40 | Nikkor 50/1.8 | f/1.8 | ISO200 | Handheld

Dashed Upon the Rocks
Made by Ar'alani
Sutro Baths, San Francisco and I went on a really fun (and cold) photowalk on my last visit to San Francisco, and I finally got my chance to visit the Sutro Baths. I've walked past it a bunch of times, but never in the right lighting or with photography in mind. While the sunset fizzled unhelpfully, the lighting after the sun sank below the horizon started to glow like mad. Cliff House projected a beautiful crystal and gold glow across the water, making long exposures difficult to meter properly. I love the ethereal light on the right-side rocks, lending a ghostly serenity to the ocean (which was anything but serene that day--holy cow, I've never seen waves like that in SF). We had a fun time keeping our lenses free of spray. I had to come home and scrub the salt off my UV filters. Several times. :-) 30-second exposure @ 10mm, ISO 100, f/13

Baba & Desi at Ocean Beach
Made by the other Martin Taylor
For Sazzy Desi and Babalu at Ocean Beach with other small dogs this morning - they get so excited when you tell them that they're going to the beach. The weather could not have been more beautiful. Please do not add No to Flickr Video bigotry in this image's comments. I understand there's a vocal community protesting Flickr's addition of a video feature. If you are among this number I do understand you POV but, after consideration, I think video is an interesting addition and that's my prerogative. If you don't like video on Flickr don't watch or contribute. I don't need a bunch of fascists telling me to f-off to You-Tube - it's up to each individual to choose without your sanctimonious, mean-spirited intimidation.

Twilight Sutro Baths
Made by Landscape Images by David Shield
Located at the west end of Geary Boulevard in San Francisco, this is a section of what is left of the old Sutro Baths that burnt down in 1966. I just got this shot off using an aperture of f8. I wanted to include more star detail; however attempts to capture this view using a wider aperture, resulted in significant loss of image sharpness at the edges. Sadly, some debris pollution mixed in with algae is visible in the foreground. This kind of pollution in the parks system is rapidly increasing, and has unfortunately become a real obstacle for photographers. I was however, just happy to get out this past weekend and explore a new location. Nikon D700 18-35mm f3.5 at 18mm 97 Seconds f8 ISO 200 (No Filters)

Sutro Baths
Made by Andy Frazer
After last weekend's full moon trip to Kirby Cove, we stopped at Sutro Baths on the way home. I've shot at Sutro at night at least six times, but I never get bored with it. There's always some new angle to find (and I haven't fallen into the water, yet). Last weekend was the lowest tide I've ever seen up there. This is part of the foundation of the former swimming pool complex. I think this is where the water would drain back out to the ocean. Full moon, ambient street light, and some light painting with an LED flashlight For suggestions about how to photograph Sutro Baths, take a look at the California page of the Free Photo Guide website.

This weekend I tried my hand at a Tadder'esque style in a shoot for a Bay Area personal trainer, Melissa Aycock. It went pretty well given that I don't have Tim Tadder's loads of high-powered equipment or his talent. :) I used two bare strobes which was very challenging as they were connected optically and had a very limited range. I used a .5 CTO to the left which I handheld along with a shutter remote and a .25 CTO on the right for this shot. It was a lot of trial and mostly error especially given the challenges in post to deconstruct that look. It was fun though and Melissa was a great sport through it all. Thanks Melissa!

Seal Rocks - San Francisco, California This cluster of rocks just off shore from the popular Cliff House has been seen in thousands of images, from historic to recent. Once again, I have passed this area countless times, but never took the time to make any images of the area. The idea came to mind after I finished up my last images from . Distant Cliff House
Made by 2composers
On a windy, grey and foggy day at Ocean Beach, the Seal Rocks, Cliff House as well as Sutro Heights look forlorn in the distance when viewed through the vandalized, once coin-operated binoculars. Through this broken viewfinder located on the ocean promenade at the Great Highway, one can distinguish the Camera Obscura on the left of the Cliff House. In the far distance to the left, the mountains of Marin Headlands pierce through the fog. I have been a volunteer at the National Park Service Visitors Center at the Cliff House, the one that has since been closed; it's where I became interested in Adolph Sutro and his legacy that still continues to influence this area of San Francisco.

Bay To Breakers. San Francisco, CA. The Bay to Breakers is an actual 12KM marathon held every third Sunday of May and there are actually pros and semi-pros running the race. But the real appeal of this event are the so-called back of the pack runners. There you'll find a lot of interesting characters, some in costumes and some in various stages of undress (i.e., from topless, bottomless to full-on nude). I didn't really get a lot of shots since we came in late and besides some of the photos I took may not be safe for Flickr. For this photo, I had to crop the top off just to leave some to the imagination, but the sign on her cute shorts says it all... ;-))

the windmill and the crow
Made by •Sarah P•
In 1902, the parks commission authorized construction of two windmills to pump subterranean water to supply Golden Gate Park. The first one, on the north side of the park facing the Pacific Ocean, was completed in 1903 and became known first as the North Windmill and later as the Dutch Windmill; it is now paired with the Queen Wilhelmina Tulip Garden. The second, Murphy's Windmill, on the south side of the park, began operation in 1908. They operated for several decades, but fell into disrepair after the park switched to electric water pumps. The Dutch Windmill was restored in 1981, but, as of 2009, Murphy's Windmill's restoration is still in progress. HSS

North, across the bow of the King Phillip
Made by mephistofales
The bones of a 129-year old shipwreck that surfaced on San Francisco's Ocean Beach this week appear and disappear every 20 years or so, like Brigadoon, the mythical Scots village that appears out of the spring mist. The wreck is of the clipper ship King Philip, which appeared out of the sand Monday. The King Philip was wrecked at high tide in January 1878 and shows itself on very low tides every so often. The last time the ship showed up was after storms in 1985. The King Philip's latest appearance has drawn hundreds of people, who come and stare at the old ship's timbers, which are awash where the foamy surf meets the shore at the foot of Noriega Street.
