Senegal Parrots (Poicephalus senegalus) in the Wild

Senegal Parrots (Poicephalus senegalus) in the Wild
Made by tj.haslam
A common bird for the pet trade, but these two natives hanging out tree-top in Mermoz, a residental district in Dakar. Shot @ dusk so relatively high ISO and grain. Bird to the top right possibly a female. This not necessarily a breeding pair, however: parrots are highly social and in fact there were actually three birds in the tree at this time but only two mostly visible. ID guidelines (from Wikipedia): * The V-shape of the vest is usually longer in females, so that the green area extends down over the chest to between the legs whereas in males it ends midway down the chest. * The female's beak and head are generally slightly smaller and narrower than the male's. * The under-tail covert feathers (short feathers under the base of the main tail feathers) are generally mostly yellow in the Male and generally mostly green in the female. * Males are generally, but not always, larger and heavier than female birds.

Male and Female(?) Village Weaver (Ploceus cuculatus) in breeding plumage

Male and Female(?) Village Weaver (Ploceus cuculatus) in breeding plumage

Update 1 March 2007: Status of the yellow-white streaked Village Weaver under review. Breeding plumage (). Male, indicated by the black hood. Female, indicated by the more extensive yellow in the normally greyish breast and belly feathers. These two were sitting together on the same strand of barbed wire with the male relatively closer (hence the size difference -- not that exaggerated in real life. Since I could not get both in focus at the same time, I took alternative pics). Incidently, I was almost home after a frustrating all-day Saturday birding in both Technopole and Hann Park but finding limited opportunities. These two were perched just 200 meters from my residence. The bird gods are fickle but today at least rewarded perseverance.

Tooth Brushing

Tooth Brushing

In Senegal, the chewing stick is called sothiou, which means to clean in the local Wolof language. In east Africa, the stick is called mswaki, the Swahili word for toothbrush. Their users say the sticks are also medicinal, providing not just dental hygiene but also curing a variety of other ills. Dental experts agree they seem to clean teeth well and some up-market health stores in the United States have been selling chew-sticks as a natural form of dental care. www.blackvoices.com/boards/health-and-fitness/health/heal...

Still sorting through The Gambia pics, with about 28 more to go. Let me thank all of you who have dropped by to to view, comment and even invite. This one -- Beautiful Sunbird (Cinnyris pulchellus) -- taken last Saturday in Dakar, a week after I returned from The Gambia. One of the advantages of living in Senegal -- you can see the occasional sunbird on the way to the office. As a lark, I took my camera as I had some work to catch up on -- and there he was, on the wire, calling.

Blue-naped Mousebird (Urocolius macrourus)

Juvenile, possible female. Seen with two others -- on one of whom the blue nape is barely visible, but the longer tail of a more mature bird unfortunately concealed by the twigs! Lovely bird in flight. These shots near dusk, so a higher ISO and deliberately over-exposed to get more details visible. Not happy with the graininess -- but I take what the bird gods give me, and was happy for this sighting/photo of a new bird for me. Dakar, Senegal. Near my residence.

"Teenage" Mystery Sunbird

Update: Mystery solved. Variable sunbird (Cinnyris venustus). 1. Other (poorer) pics show the purple and yellow emerging on the torso. 2. Other variable sunbirds spotted in same area. A male in transitional plumage, looking rather awkward at the moment. He'll be a small jewel of a bird soon enough. Not sure of the species ID -- though experts I'm told can often determine it by the bill. Unique shape (the general curve and length) for each species.

To my friends, contacts and viewers for wading through The Gambia pics. About 28 more to come, I'm afraid. Seems not fully mature. With two others. This one has a long tail -- but concealed by the twigs! Lovely bird in flight. Back on 18 March!

Have a week of vacation coming up -- but will be offline in The Gambia. If all goes well, I'll return with plenty of bird photos. For this pic, I used the flash -- as one can tell. The bird was under the tree shadow and heavily back-lit. But I still thought it might make a fun shot. Common Bulbul (Pycnonotus barbatus). Looking just a little bit guilty.

Muscle Beach, Point Fann

At Point Fann, Dakar, Senegal. On the Corniche. A public exercise facilty w/ wonderfully homemade / old school equipment. This Sunday morning empty -- but usually the place is packed with Senegalese hitting weights, doing pullups, military presses and more. Inspiring. It's not the gear that matters but the dedication and work ethic.

Demonstration, Day Two

Demonstration, Day Two

On Av. Cheik Anta Diop, Mermoz district. College students at ENEA staging a demonstration over an ongoing dispute with the government. The police arrived shortly, cleared the street without any noticeable violence, and the avenue was open to traffic by about 8:15-8:20 AM. Police are still here in the area at 11 AM.

My first sighting of this bird was a pair of them in Hann Park, at treetop, about 30 meters / 100 feet up. A true what the heck is that moment. The bird really does have hair like the mad scientist in Back to the Future, usually--not always--like here sticking up. @ Technopole, Senegal.

French colonial influence apparent. But adapted and modified by the Senegalese elites. circa late 19th early 20th century. This from International Day at Suffolk University, Dakar -- an event dedicated to showcasing African customs and traditions in food, dance, dress and music.

Wild, free & squaking up a storm. One of a last dozen birds pics for a while, I'm afraid. My Zuiko 50-200mm lens trashed in a Dakar taxi incident -- but my fault mostly for not paying attention. Not going to be able to service or replace it until I'm back in the USA in July.

Yet another new bird for Flickr, and another 5 minute exclusive for Birds-GS before I cross post to FBW. This one playing the dirt right outside where I'm living in Dakar -- the Mermoz section. Saves me the trip to the Mauritanian border, I guess.

Little Weaver (Ploceus luteolus)

Little Weaver (Ploceus luteolus)

All these yellow-ish weavers look alike. This one --a male in breeding plumage -- has grey-black legs, mask not hood, and olive-ish mantle. Hence ID'd as a Little Weaver. Mermoz, Dakar, Senegal.

Mystery Sunbird

Transitional plumage, so I'm not certain of the the ID. Bill seems too short and not curved enough for the Variable Sunbird (Cinnyris venustus). Not the Pygmy Sunbird (Hedydipna platura).

Trying out the new EC 1.4 teleconvertor. This weaver -- and they all do look pretty much alike -- near my residence in Mermoz, Dakar, Senegal. Aka, Blackheaded Weaver.
