Nuuk (The Cape in Greenlandic) (Danish: Godthåb, which translates to "Good Hope" in English) is the capital and largest city of the self-governing Danish territory of Kalaallit Nunaat (Greenland). The city was founded in 1728 by the Norwegian missionary Hans Egede, and given the name Godthåb. However Hans Egede had arrived at place he called Colony of Hope (in Danish known as Håbets Ø) close to the already existing inuit population living in Kangeq. At this time Greenland was technically a Norwegian colony under the Dano-Norwegian Crown, but the colony had not had any contact with Norway proper for more than two centuries.

The old colonial town is located on the east coast side of the town center. Here you will also find the statue of Hans Egede, Hans Egede's House and church the tourist office, the national museum and Santa Claus's post office and mailbox.

Brædtet, , is where fresh fish, seal and whale meat is sold.

On our last full day in Greenland, the weather finally decided to reveal its true self. After several bright, warm days with clear, sunny skies- I was ready for some frigid blustery cloudiness. It's hard to see from the photos, but these clouds were blazing through town. They hovered incredibly low but without actually blocking views, sort of like reticent fog banks. I think these massive tenement blocks seem a lot less bleak somehow when it's cloudy outside; they blend in instead of standing out.

As we were leaving the room, a group of Danish women were approaching. An older woman kept hissing, No! and refusing to enter, while the other kept trying to pull her in shouting, Mummies!

25/08/2009 Nuuk (Groenlandia). Erfalasorput, letteralmente la nostra bandiera, capeggia sul lato di un edificio in Aqqusinersuaq. Questo immenso murales risale al 21 giugno 2009, giorno in cui la Groenlandia è divenuta nazione indipendente, fatta eccezione per la politica estera, la politica della sicurezza e quella monetaria che restano dominio della Danimarca.

The flock of ducks here are the common eiders, the brighter ones are male, the darker are female. This is their winter plumage. Picture taken in march. I accidentally used ISO 3200 on the entire photo session, so I had to do some noise reduction to make the pictures appear decent. The downside is that a good deal of sharpness and detail is lost.


Sikorsky S61N at the hospital

Air Greenland Sikorsky coming in at the hospital. One of the very few around still flying despite its 44+ yrs in service here in Greenland. In every case, it´s one the last flying around in the old Grønlandsfly livery. This livery is being replaced by the new Air Greenland livery - which is truly one of the most beatiful in the air ever.

This cute little bird is a purple sandpiper busy looking for something to eat in the tidal zone of this rocky shore. Picture taken in march.
