braun's dwarf sculpture and the castle, garden, nove mesto nad metuji

Hardly known to tourists, Nove Mesto nad Metuji is a small town in northeastern Bohemia, close to the Polish border (province of Hradec Kralove). Even the mighty Lonely Planet has no reference whatsoever to this New Town by the Metuji river. But it's such a charming place. Highly recommended. The town has three main attractions. 1; Tthe picturesque locarion. The old town sits on the tip of a cliff gouged out by the Metuji river that surrounds the town in 270 degrees. 2: A huge rectangular square surrounded by beautiful Renaissance facades, not dissimilar to Telc's more famous (and touristy) version. While Telc's square is stuffed with tourists, the one in Nove Mesto is packed by cars, as it serves as a parking lot. 3: A cute castle and its adjacent garden. The garden is approached only through the wooden bridge over the moat (now drained). The garden, as well as the castle facade, is embellished with a series of quite interesting (and funny) sculptures of dwarfs, executed by the great Baroque sculptor Mathias Bernard Braun (I think all exhibited outside are replicas for conservational reasons). You'd feel like you were in a real Disneyland. Those aren't the original locations of these sculptures, which were bought en bloc in 19th century by the then landlord of the castle. for more pictures from the town,
