Dawning Light - Lake Tahoe
Made by Ar'alani
Oh, it was hard to get up for this one. I'm not a morning person by choice or design. When I climbed into my slightly icy car, I had to grin at the temperature gauge. 18 degrees. Yummy. Thank heavens for four shirts, a hoodie, a hat, two pairs of gloves, and two layers of pants. I very closely resembled a pear with two stumps underneath it. It was barely, barely light outside when I drove down from the motel to Kings Beach. Blue streaks were starting to show through the deep black of the night skies, and stars slowly disappeared one by one. I trotted along the completely deserted beach (frozen, like concrete) and found some wonderful places. It was hard to take my eyes off the sky long enough to take a picture. I liked this place best, directly left of the boat ramp. The rocks were fun lilypads and easily traversed--that part of the lake had iced over and was stable for walking. There were many little leaves floating in the non-frozen parts of the water. Tahoe's fast transition between fall and winter astonishes me. An older gentleman hopped out of his truck and joined me for awhile, enjoying the sunrise with his point-and-shoot. We talked about hiking, cameras, San Francisco, retirement, being young, and all the wonders of the world to be seen. The conversation helped keep me warm as we both witnessed steam rising in clouds from the lake, and finally welcomed the sun over the mountains. A lot of hopping up and down helped, too. 10mm - 10-second exposure - Digital Rebel

Solitude
Made by Ar'alani
I love this picture. While completely lacking in action and excitement, it really captures the absolute peace and tranquility of the morning I took it. I was the only person on the beach, sand frozen in crunchy slabs beneath my shoes. Being almost too dark to take pictures, this is open pretty wide at 6.3 for 25 seconds. I did a lot of hopping on the sand while waiting, happy to be out at the crack of dawn and free of all obligations to anyone for an entire week.

Lake Tahoe Wave

Even lakes can have waves, some created by wind and some by boats. This is a photo from the side of Lake Tahoe, CA with the wave breaking on the beach.
